Sorta sad that it was because of forum comments about his GTX480 review. I figure you have to have thick skin sometimes when reviewing stuff that has fanbois on both sides but if he's lost motivation to keep going then there's no point in him continuing. I'm sure he'll find something better to do anyway.

I just briefly glanced at it and the only thing I really saw were complaints that he used Cats 9.12 instead of 10.3. I definitely didn't read the whole thing though.

I think it's early April fools but why not play along :) Might go register on the forums to stir up some fermi stuff.

From W1zzard's reply at XS, it doesn't seem to be a joke. He actually posted that he wanted to sell the site on the 27th.

He reviewed GTX480 and compared it to Radeon5870 with 5 months old drivers... and he then went on to say "i dont know why i bother with these reviews, you guys always find something to complain about".... you have gotto be kidding me.

Not like the internett didnt get to know that Radeons got new performance drivers in 10.3a ....

wheres your backbone man!

:D

im opting for 1.april joke, just not well timed.

Oh.. if that's the case he probably didn't even retest the 5870 just copy pasted the bench results :(

I dunno about April fools, he held off in responding but when he did, he was pretty pissed.

It only made sense to test the 5870 with premature drivers given Fermi's fresh release.

He's one of the better reviewers on the internet, and TPU is exponentially better than crapshoot forums like [F]. Only reason I'm here is for the B/S/T forum.

I disagree, very much.

It makes no sense to test something at a state noone is using it. If anyone is still using their 2009 drivers on 5870: thats their loss. Most if not all are using the latest or those prior to that, normally WHQL(spelling?) certified drivers. In this case, most if not everyone, is using 10.3

And you wont find an agreement on fresh drivers for GTX480 from this guy, Nvidia has been tweaking those drivers since december 2009 at least.

Im kinda stupified at how some (very few, but still some) can actually argument for reviews using outdated drivers. It lacks seriousness. You either use the latest drivers, or the drivers that the company thinks are the best (i.e 10.3a performance drivers for ATI cards).

I would be making this case for Nvidia aswell if the tables were turned. :D

April fools? If not, it's a shame. I always read the news headlines on TPU everyday. W1zzards reviews aren't exactly AT but they do look at some interesting stuff like PCI-E scaling etc. W1zzard is perhaps best known for his software projects- GPU-Z, ATi-Tool if they fall into disrepair it'll be a big loss for everyone.

I like his tear down pics. He's one of the few that takes time show PCB details. I've referred back to his reviews dozens of times for reference... :(

Me too, TPU's reviews have been the best place for infomation on the PCB's of different cards to use for volt modding etc.

Wow the overacting and butthurtness in that thread (480gtx review comments one) is pretty monumental.

a lot of people are saying this is an april 1st joke... but it isn't april 1st yet (that is tomorrow)

I don't know what "drama" he is complaining about. i just read the first 6 pages of comments:
1. 2/3 people complained that using 9-12 drives instead of 10-03 or even just 10-02 is unfair to AMD, who increased performance about 15% between the those.
2. everyone said its way too hot and noisy for them to buy one (which is in line with what the review said)

is there a specific page where the "drama" starts?

also, people didn't mention it but mixing DC10 and DX11 tests together is downright misleading and confusing. Don't include any DX10 cards in the DX11 reviews instead of having a chart showing both.
also, he made the note that nvidia said originally that it will be 295 watts, nvidia never said that... semiaccurate did. Nvidia had to correct him on that point.
however, as he himself noted, nvidia says the TDP is 250 watts on the card and he measured 320 watt (which he said in an edit that nvidia denies is possible saying it will never take more then 250 watts... lolwot?)

I got pretty much the same from that thread. Unless a shit load of posts have been deleted then I think he's overreacting.

He could of course just be pretty much burned out on the whole thing and this just pushed him over the edge.

step 1: accept nvidia's bribe to skew big fermi review on your reputable site (especially one reputable with GPUs)
step 2: flip the site to some 'company', big payout for wiz
step 3: nvidia (company) obtains control of TPU and also gets their marketing department their own dedicated complex. after recent expansion to over 50% of the headcount starting about two quarters ago, the rest of the workforce at NV welcome marketing's departure to their new future home. current employees of TPU are ecstatic that they are joining NV's payroll and landing awesome jobs as they pursue their way overcompensated new positions in the exact same way, instead publishing the results handed to them this time by NV.
step 4: another whoring out to the man. this is what will plague the internet in the future.
step 5: NV gives its software department source code to gpu-z and improve it further by neutering support for ATi cards.
step 6: profit

^ agreed with Spikesoldier.

Wiz sold out for quick profit, plain and simple. I actually think he's a coward using such excuse to leave the site. He's moving with another project to make some more money. This is life. Every programmer must make money eventually, even Linus Torvald had to give up his Linux project eventually and go make money in the corporate world.

I'm a little amused at all the people dropping tears for him. Don't worry folks, he's prolly way better off financially now than before. Could even out pimping a new car and girl too.

I guess "most" just means most of the people posting in enthusiast forums. I know a lot of gamers in the area LAN party community who are total PC gamers, but who also never update their drivers. Heck, I'm one of them! My test rigs at work get updated, but my computers at home just runs on whatever drivers I installed them with. Basically whenever I install Windows I use the latest drivers, and then never touch 'em.

Just checked and I'm on 186.18. This is the main computer I use at home. The games I currently play (L4D, L4D2, TF2, BFBC2, COD4, CODWAW, WoW) all work fine, so I don't feel it necessary to "fix" what is not broken.

ok, but when you read a review comparing GTX 480 and 5870 and find out the 10.3 drivers are 10% faster than what you're using wouldn't you update upon reading that? The review is only targeted at people that read reviews :)

He's overreacting. Why he's doing so is not my business and I don't really care.
He made a mistake and really shouldn't be surprised to get a few negative comments.

Linus Torvalds is still lead project coordinator for the Linux Kernal.

i don't know if this happened here... but china employs 280 thousand people to post favorable comments and information about it online.
