Question W11 24H2 require MS account

Today I installed W11 24H2 Home on a laptop using USB drive created by Rufus with the customization to not require MS account, but did not select 'create a local account with predefined user name'. However, if you connect to the internet before setup is fully completed, it will download a big update that will override that and force you to sign in using MS account. The oobe \bypassnro thing won't work. I reinstalled but this time did not connect to the internet, when it got to that same page there was a little textual 'I do not have internet' and proceeded to allow creation of a local account. Not sure about how things work on Pro.

Yeah to my understanding the Home version is really insistent on having a MS account. Pro should be easier to configure.

I will likely be upgrading from Windows 10 eventually, so hopefully the upgrades will go smoothly and I won't have to do any fresh install. Also, I hope that means I won't have to tweak as much after, as I already have my Windows 10 setup.

Pro is the same as home. Enterprise is the only version that doesn't hound you for an account.

It's an easy fix, you can either apply the workaround by hand or use Rufus to image your USB and check the box to disable network requirement.

I used rufus to do exactly what you did, but I DID check 'create a local account'.

It worked perfectly, and the old windows 10 user name was preserved. This was on an old dell laptop made in 2012 or thereabouts, which does not comply with new draconian and phony Mivcrosoft requirements, (but beforehand I had converted it to GPT and UEFI boot). It was online with internet access the whole time.

Also, it had previously been updated from win 7 to win 10. The activation also followed with no problems.

So far, so good.

It sounds like you performed an upgrade over existing OS? That should always preserve existing local accounts. I was referring to clean install above.

I have 11 Pro, used Rufus, checked all boxes, I still get a change password for local account every month or 3, can't remember the time frame.

Anyway, I just leave the fields blank, and voila no MS login.
