W10- How to get XP mode.

WinXP mode was free under Windows Virtual PC when running windows 7 Pro/Enterprise/Ultimate. If I install xp in hyper v inside W10 it is not free. How can I get the license out of windows 7 virtual pc mode and have it activate in hyper v? I pasted the key and it will not activate.

I have looked over other posts and cannot figure it out.

Reason: Need XP to run very old CNC machines which the software for them is obsolete.

AFAIK, unless you're talking about something that works on old serial ports (in which case I'd have to wonder why the software doesn't work on Win10), then the host very likely needs a working driver so it can route requests to that hardware to and from the VM OS.

From a licensing stand point, you cannot. Its not free anymore and was only free in Win7 Pro and higher.

From a technical standpoint, you probably could use a product key viewer and get the key and then do an install in hyper-v/or copy the config and hdd file over

but to properly do it you would have to use your own copy of WinXP
