After driving an AC-less '00 sunfire through a couple midwestern summers, I am finally in a position to be able to purchase a genuinely 'new' vehicle. So a few weeks ago I went to the local Mazda dealer and picked out new 3 :) I would have prefered a small truck or a blazer-sized SUV, but a)they can be considerably more expensive and b) with the way gas is going, they'd be more expensive to run, too. The gas mileage is much beter on the vehicle like this. So far I love it, and I'm leaving tommorow evening to take it on the longest drive yet - 300+ miles up to St. Louis to visit friends and family for the weekend. Do have a couple questions, though:

first: under the hood, there is a big plastic plate or cover, for lack of a better way to describe it. Anybody that's looked under the hood of a 3 or 6 knows what I'm talking about. Does this serve any functional purpose? just curious. If not, I may yank it out; I'm sure Ford/Mazda engineers know what they're doing, but it seems to me that such a cover would trap heat around the engine.

second: I got an automatic. I know some people will ridicule puting an auto on a small engine, but I don't have much choice - I've tried driving a stick before, and it ain't pretty :p That said, the transmission is a 'semi-auto'. It can be driven in full auto, or switched and driven as a clutchless stick. It doesn't go completely manual though; try to do something stupid and the computer will take over and kick it up a gear before the engine redlines and blows up. Have you driven one of these before? how did you like it?

pics are on the way. Have to upload them first.

I'm thinking of getting one myself. My Volvo is going to need some work done on it so I figure I might as well trade it in while it is still worth something. Haven't found anything in that price range that I really like other then the 3 so...

the plate would be the engine cover. it covers up the engine so it looks "neat"

i have the manual shift on my automatic altima. i think it's pretty pointless unless i try to drive it fast. but you mentioned it: gas ain't cheap.

To the plastic cover. Many people (mainly females, non car inclined males) thought that an engine was ugly, and wanted it to look better. So to give it a better look to it, they started putting plastic covers over it to make it look more aesthetically pleasing.

I hate them. I like the natural look of engines. It's on almost all engines now, including my Expedition's 5.4. You can remove it without worries.

Never tried a semi-auto so I can't tell you about that.

I was in the same boat. AC was shot and was going to be expensive to fix, the speakers were going out, and the 'sound system', such as it was, didn't even have a tape deck, let alone a CD player :p Made for a pretty boring drive through the no-man's land between Springfield/Rolla and St. Louis.

I prefer the look of the engine itself to the 'nice and tidy' cover, as well.

I like the nice and tidy look actually. But since it gets dirty anyway.. screw it. That and it became the home for a mouse in the winter. Good thing it didn't chew up any wiring or I would be VERY VERY pissed.

I got the 6 and it's fun to drive.

The new Mazda's have suspensions that hug the road and their light weight make them excellent for cornering.

Have fun and good luck. Don't do anything crazy on the turns until you get a good feel for her.
