how do the degaussing coils work?
i know that they get rid of magnetism, but how do they do it?

degaussing works by re-aligning the magnetic fields inside the CRT to compensate for the external magnetism.

you know about electromagnets right?

it's like a lot of wires wrapped around a piece of metal (that magnets stick to)...

well, the coil is like that except it has no piece of metal in the center, and has hundreds to thousands of "turns" meaning wrappings...

I thought TVs degaussed themselves when they were turned on and off a few times? or is that only newer models?

the magnetic field generated by the coil is somewhat HUGE, compared to the earth's

but the field since it's magnetic drops off at 1/r^2 where r is the distance from the origin of the field.

so, when it's close to the screen, the coils realign the magnetic field which has altered the color of the screen...

but when it moves away, the field generated by the coil is uniform, because it is a "field" so after several feet, the color becomes normal and then the power to the coil is cut off.
