This is the second laptop I've upgraded the processor in this past weekened (got two 850MHZ MMC2 processors which happen to be the fastest of it's generation). Upgrading the processor in the dell, while accessing the internals is albiet less intuitive in general (all parts access), it was fairly decent allowing me to upgrade the processor with in 30 minutes. Now upgrading the processor in my sony vaio, well thats a different story.
The accessing of the internals is much easier overall since I can get inside with in 1 minute (opposed to a good 10minutes on the dell which requires unscrewing keyboard from underneath, unlatching etc..). But changing the optical drive, HDD from here are easily changeable with out removing much else but to change the Cmos battery or changing out the processor, boy thats a whole new ball game.
In order to remove and change the processor, I have to remove screws in different places for the heatsink then requiring a sliding motion type thing which is difficult to master (done this before, changed thermal paste). Only to discover that in order to change out the processor, I have to remove the whole screen which is a good 10 screws away. Once I got the screen out, I had to unscrew the processor, now things would have SEEMED to been done, but no, on the dell I was able to remove the processor easily, on here I had to be extremely careful to not damage anything, had to pry a plastic latch hidden underneath off to free the processor. Reassembly was easy but man did it take a while.
Cliffs: Changed out two processors in my laptops this weekend, dell laptop overall for any upgrading is a PITA, and the sony vaio is easy for typical upgrading but anything more serious like processor changing requires practically a whole dissasembly of the laptop.
Overall the dell laptop was say 30 minutes to change the processor, and the Sony Vaio was 2 hours, 2 hours is pretty good for practically a complete dissasembly (which includes the temporary removal of the screen to access the processor).
