Been waiting since 2009, but it's FINALLY here... And, it's worth the wait.

OMG!!! I *feel* like I hit the Lotto!

Articles abound. Here's a couple:

GIMP 2.8 officially released (GIMP 2.8 final PPA available)

DOWNLOAD GIMP 2.8 SCRIPT-FUS PACK (MORE THAN 100 EFFECTS AND FILTERS)

If you've been less-than-impressed with GIMP, in the past, you might want to give 2.8 a whirl.

Single-window mode is a jaw-dropper! 😉

Hands-on: new single-window mode makes GIMP less gimpy (Feb 2010, to give you a sense of time. LoL!)

Hasn't hit Debian testing yet, but I'm looking forward to trying it out. I dunno about the single window thing. I was irritated with multiple windows when I started using Gimp, but now that I'm used to it, it works pretty well for me. I'll definitely give it a try, but I'm leaning towards keeping the old interface.

The OP is late, it was released on the 3rd of May. 😛

I'm interested in the new development version though. It has 16 and 32 bit colour support. 🙂

Well I've finally gotten around to installing 2.8.
Very impressed and though I'm used to split windows the single window is pretty impressive. Of course you can switch back and forth easily.
Thanks OP

Been using it for a month or so.
Much improved in 2.8 for sure.
I like the now rotatable brushes.

The new on-canvas text editing tool is not ready for prime time. At times the controls can extend outside the client area and are thus inaccessible. You have to shift the layer/canvas around to bring them back into view.
Also the on-canvas text controls only affect text that is selected, not all text in the textbox by default. For that you switch to the sidebar controls. Awkward.

I've been hamstrung for years waiting for Gimp to improve the text capabilities to the point they should have been 8 years ago. I CAN BOLD TEXT NAO!! My patience is not infinite - I'm pissing my life away - where's my paid software?

As you may guess, I use Gimp almost exclusively for title creation.

Single window mode? Sold. I will try it. I always found it super annoying to use because of all the little windows. Is it also easier to do basic tasks like cropping? I remember when I used it I had to go through menus to use it instead of being able to click on a button, but that was a while back.
