Just got the precious email that I have been waiting for over 2 years now, Verizon FIOS is now available here, so I can dump fing comcast which constantly crashes here, is down for the whole weekend at least once every month, and charges a dime and a leg (50$) for 6mb down, 633 up, and get raped up the rear for any type of cable here.

Going to call and order FIOS now, Up to 20 Mbps/5 Mbps for the same price (50$). Just as long as it is not one of those stupid "for the first 6 month things".

I will update as this continues.

Oh one question, can I still run Vonage off of FIOS?

In the words of William Wallace from Braveheart for all those who hate the Comcast monopoly around here...

I call shens on that. I'd be willing to bet you'd pay $75 a month for FIOS and not say a damn word :D.

Congrats!

Just checked, it is a one year agreement, that price for the whole year.

A bit of topic, but could you run a game server off that connection? Say a 32 player BF2 server? 5 Megs up seems like it should be enough.

Ah... would that I were "stuck" with comcast. People who complain about comcast have never had to deal with charter, aka the most incompetently run large company in the universe.

Yep, I'm leaving Comcast this month when we move into our new house. Good riddance. Finally can get DSL (1.5 down/1 up, good enough for me) again at the new place (even though it's a similar distance from the same CO, riddle me that) so I'm switching to that and the dish. Service with Comcast wasn't so bad (big improvement over TCI and ATTBI that came before them), it's just that Comcast's prices suck compared to what you get. I'm adding channels and services switching to DSL/Dish AND still saving a bunch of money.

edit: I still can't get FIOS unless I moved out of Qwest territory. Verizon territory is just a few miles west but I wanted to stay in The City proper.

My Comcast cable is pretty great right now with speeds of 15K/360 pretty consistently. I wish the upload was faster but the download and ping times are really good.

You're not actually getting 18 up, that is just Comcast's powerboost. If the test lasted longer than 20 seconds you would see your real speed.

Well, on good servers for large files I can get 2.5M download speeds which is pretty fast... not exactly sure what that translates to in rated speed.
