A cowbell is a bell that is tied to a string and hung around a cow's neck.

The reference, "I need more cowebell!" comes from an SNL sketch featured the band Blue Õyster Cult in the studio recording their (soon to be) hit track "Don't Fear the Reaper" (which is an awesome song, imho).

The song has a cowbell in the background, that the producer can't get enough of. So the entire time, he's like, "that's great, guys, but I gotta have more cowbell!"
