VZW upgrade next month...

I'm finally upgrading from the stone-age (and my LG Dare), biting the bullet, and getting a smart phone with a data plan through Verizon. With that said, I'm looking to get the best phone when I can upgrade for the 2-year price (2/14/12). I know a lot can change in a month, but is the Samsung Galaxy Nexus the best option right now? I don't want an iPhone, already have an iPod Touch and that is enough Apple for me. I briefly looked at the Samsung Galaxy S2, but then realized it isn't available for Verizon. Is anything on the horizon that I should look into, or is the Nexus probably my best bet?

The Nexus, Rezound and Razr (Maxx) are all really good phones. All are good at a few different things, and all have some drawbacks. What's most important to you?

I would def go to the store and play with them as you can too.

I became eligible last week.

Want to get the Galaxy nexus, but now the price is outrageous even through Amazon, and it'll force me to drop my $5 text plan, and either pay as you go or $10 plan. Such bs.

Think I'll wait for the rumored Galaxy Journal, GN to drop to $150 for upgrades, or wait until around June to see what happens. Have a Thunderbolt now though, so not hurting for an upgrade too badly.

i think the nexus is probably the best phone on verizon. theres other similarly phoens that are almost as good. theres a rezound vs nexus thread in this forum that basically talks about it (i have both actually right now).

the maxx is nice because it has a huge battery and doesnt have a weird form factor due to it, and i think thats its biggest selling point as you just cant get that kind of battery life in a nexus so i think some of the other phones do have a few features that if they are the one that does it for you could make them worth getting as well.

i'd say the nexus is probably the best all arounder with the rezound right there, followed by stuff like the spectrum i suppose.

I can't recommend Android anymore...either iPhone (I know you said no), or the Trophy, which outside of the shitball camera department, is still smoother than the various Android models. So sad.

RockinZ28, what's this about having to drop the $5 plan? That's some kind of BS (I have the same one).

I've been eligible for an upgrade since July, and just convinced the wife to let me upgrade my Droid. I considered the Razr, Rezound, and Galaxy Nexus, but after the price drops since November\December, I'll be picking up the Rezound soon. Best screen out of the three (to my eyes), and it's about as thick as my Droid, so I can't gripe much there. I really wanted the Razr, but just couldn't get excited about how wide the Razr is, and I've got big hands.

Spoil yourself and get a Galaxy Nexus, although the iphone4s is a great phone as well if you want to test the apple waters.

I know the Rezound looks better on paper, and I myself have used phones that are better on paper, but I've learned the hard way that you want to get the phone that gets the most support/updates, and there is no doubt that is the Nexus.

Here is my theory... just buy the last gen model used from ebay or craigslist. People dump phones like you wouldn't believe.. and most smart phones are good enough. What do you want to use it for? Email, music, some web surfing, the occasional pic? Droid X is fine for this, or some other android phone, or maybe an older iPhone.

By not getting locked into a contract, you can dump the plan if times get rough, or the carrier pisses you off (it is nice leverage when you aren't in a contract). Also, you can stop worrying about insurance and all that crap. Destroy your phone? Go get another used one for cheap.

I definitely don't need the latest and greatest. Sure they look cool and are fun to play with at a store.. but at the end of the day, what do you REALLY need?

Oh, and =|---- 🙂 (stab!)

Let me see

The good
G Nexus google ics, no bloatware, sky is the limit
RAZR Maxx good battery thats all
Rezound 720p screen with sense (that is if you like it)
The Bad
Nexus weak CPU that needs to push a 720p screen, i'm not that happy
RAZR MAXX is a moto phone with locked bootloader
Rezound is Made by HTC which = crap microphones, not the best if you are going to use it for calling.

Yes when I go through the checkout and plan selection at Amazon, pay as you go and $10/1000 are the only options. Googled it and other android forums seemed to confirm this and you had to change. VZW.com was even more jacked up, I'm not even sure what the hell it was doing to my plan overall.

Upgrading from a 3G to an LTE phone last year was simple, no changes but adding LTE for free.

Probably have to go in person to a store or order through CS via phone to ensure nothing changes except my phone.

Yep I just did some digging and "in order to not confuse our silly little heads" they "streamlined" the messaging options. Pay as you go, $10/1000, or $20/unlimited.

edit: and it should be able to be grandfathered onto a new phone, but as you said...probably best to do it in person so they can know you will reach over and throttle them if they screw it up.

I just put my father on my fam plan, and he kept the $5 sms plan. We did go thru the vzw store tho. No idea how its handled thru amazon.

The hell?

What is the deal with Google Voice? I just signed up and am sending texts for free, I think.

Is there some catch to this or what? Why isn't everyone using this lol?

because you get 2 numbers

Seems fine if both parties have a smartphone. Could see how it would be annoying for feature phones users if you have to select which number to text or call each time.

Screw them though, assholes that want to have a conversation with text messages are the reason I even have a text plan. They can deal with the inconvenience now, cancelling that crap and calling Verizon to disable texts.

I never texted except on Google Voice and these smartphones let you one-click into google voice and type away. There is no benefit to keeping your texting plan for any amount, other than to keep your phone number text-wise.

I jumped into a data plan for the first time myself... the Nexus is great all around, except for the battery life. But at least I have wifi right here 90% of the time that saves it (as opposed to maintaining 4G).

I second buying a last generation phone from emay. Then joining the Kittywireless.com Page Plus plan.

You will be using the Verizon Wireless network..

You'll get unlimited talk and text and 1gig of data, again on the Verizon Wireless network for only $55 per month tax included with no contract to worry with. You can just autopay this with you debit / credit card or manually renew your plan every month.

If you have wifi at home and/or at work that makes this deal even better.

If you chose this route. Do your research with whatever phone you chose to ensure that it works with pageplus

I almost forgot about this post, whoops. 😳

Sometime this week I plan on going to the Verizon store and trying different phones out and seeing how they fit in my hands. But I definitely want to keep whatever phone I get and not sell it off right away. I did that with my last upgrade, and while I made a decent profit, its time for me to get a decent smartphone.

As for what I want in a phone, I want it all. I realize the camera on the Nexus isn't the best, and that irks me a bit. I have a regular digital camera though, and am used to the 3.2MP camera on my LG Dare. So while the camera on the Nexus is a con, its not a huge one. I like the big screen, and the internal specs. ICS will be nice, and support from Samsung sounds promising. Seems like there isn't many accessories yet, guess I'll have to wait for those.

I'll probably play with the Nexus, Razr Maxx, Rezound, and maybe the Spectrum. If anything really nice comes in the near future, I can always sell whatever phone I get to my girlfriend and get the next latest and greatest.

Still didn't feel it man, gotta work on that code. 😀

The problem I see with LTE is that the phones based on 28nm LTE chips are going to be so much better than what we currently have now that it's sad seeing people buy phones that are currently out. They are all flawed in some major way considering the options that are on the horizon:

1) LTE will the standard with the same chip controlling both 3G and 4G, leading to much better battery life.
2) 720p screens will be standard, with Samsung likely able to make a Super AMOLED+ HD screen by the end of the year that will absolutely destroy the competition.
3) Bluetooth 4.0 will be standard, leading to integration with constantly connected low-power devices.
4) NFC will be standard in all devices for contactless payments and data exchange.
5) 28nm CPUs and GPUs mean an evolutionary leap in performance to power these devices (very important with 720p displays).

But most importantly, because a contract lasts 2 years, you want to avoid spending money on a phone that will absolutely be obsolete in just 9 months. Get the Nexus and save your subsidy on the dream phone that fills all of the statements above.

So I went to the Verizon store yesterday and took a look at a couple of the phones. Had no idea the size of them until I actually held them in my hands. The Nexus seemed the biggest, but it also had some cheap case on it. I likes the feel of the Spectrum, but the menus didn't please me. I really liked ICS, too bad the Nexus is the only one to have it right now. But I also really liked the screen on the Nexus, more than the others. The RAZR MAXX was alright, didn't really like te feel of it. I'll probably just end up getting the Nexus and calling it a day, unless something really good comes out in the next two weeks...
