CAR is a British automotive magazine, I really like their articles and their humour. Now this comparo was mainly an off-roading comparo rather than on-road.
Anyway, here are a few quotes from it:
About the engine:
Regarding the on-road ride:
About the interior:
About off-roading:
There's more about the off-roading, but its too much to write. The article itself was very well written and very informative. Plus it had some awesome pics as well. You guys should really check out CAR magazine. I usually only buy one issue once a year (its $15CDN for one issue!!).
Hope you enjoyed it, since it took me time to type out all that!!
Anyway, here are a few quotes from it:
About the engine:
What is unique to the Tourag...is its V10 twin-turbo diesel engine, the kind of mechanical force that if mis-used could bring down governments or stop the world turning on its axis. Coming up the highway, this thing just blew the Range Rover's BMW 4.4 V8, not normally seen as a shy engine, into dust.
Of course, the VW is a shallower drinker. We managed 22mpg on long-distance roads and 16 when off-roading. The Range Rover's figures were 17 and 12.5 in the same circumstances. Ouch. They both ahve OPEC friendly 100L tanks, so the VW can take you comfortably over 450 miles on a run. This really is the powertrain that makes big off-roader sense.
Regarding the on-road ride:
...its the Rangie that's the better of the two on highways. Its air springs are noticeable smoother than the VWs, even when the VW's variable dampers is set to "comfort". Its seems quieter than teh VW too.
About the interior:
The Rangie has a special cabin too. The Touareg is just a car, not as well made as the Phaeton or the Range Rover. Land Rover designers never like to do anything that even faintly resembles anyone else's efforts. It's [interior] dignified, almost regal here. And rear passengers have usefull more room to sretch in the Ragnie...
About off-roading:
The Touareg is all action. Its gigantic engine thunders away as it yanks two-and-a-half tonnes of machinery up every hillock. The suspension groans and thumps, and your body is chucked aroudn with it all. There's a continual racket as the traction control goes about its business, a series of buzzes and grunts as in turn the brake calipers respond to the traction control's orders. Often the whole vehicle rocks as it dangles a wheel in the air. It's a remarkable display of power and technology overcoming terrain....
......The Range Rover is altogether different. It works with the land instead of against it. There's no apparent effort, little noise and nowhere near the bouncing and bashing around. It just claws it way along, through all the same fathomless mud and ruts, the same mad gradients. After all these years of building only 4x4s, Land Rover builds a vehicle that might be stuffed with technology but it seems almost biologically adapted to these conditions: off-roading is innate to it.
