VW jetta...gls vr6 or turbo? car clueless=( value?

I'm gonna get a car and i wanted to keep it under 18k total (WITH tax included), but the blue lagoon colored jetta is simply BEAUTIFUL. I must have it! So, i was wondering what the best bang for the buck is and any estimated costs for it?

I live in chicago, IL zip code 60608 if anyone wants to help

I configured a GLS vr6 w/ leather, sunroof or moonfoor (i forgot), and automatic tranny for around 24,000 on their website. I was wondering how much i might be able to talk them down and how accurate the online price is comared to the actual. I want to go to the dearlship and check it out but my mom's too busy and i highly doubt they'll take an 18 year old very seriously. I have a friend who picked up a similarly equiped jetta vr6 w/ alot more options for 19,000 so around 23,000 after taxes and everything, but that WAS around october, november when our economy was dirt LOW.

So what is the best deal? I need leather for some reason. I'm not that much of a speedster so i was wondering what is the diff between the 176 hp vr6 and 180 hp 1.8 tubo? I'm pretty sure both those are worth it over the puny 90hp or 115hp of those other choices. Thanx!

DUDE TURBO JETTAS ARE FRIGGEN AWESOME ;)

My friend took me out in his the day after he bought it. He was EASILY able to smoke the tires with both our fat asses in there. Also, we went 140mph on the freeway ;) How;s that for a felony :D

Get the 1.8L or the TDi. The VR6 is overkill IMHO. You can chip the 1.8 and get a lot more HP w/a $300 investment in the chipping. Since you're not a spped demon, look at the diesel (TDi). Its gets like 50 plus MPG, and you can modify it easily as well. If you're serious about a VeeDubb, ask the good folks in the forums here for advice.

where do you find an ECU chip for german cars for $300?!? the ECU chip for my brother's audi s4 was almost 1100 and he did plenty of shopping around. the chip for the a4 1.8t is around 800 too... if you can find it for 300, that's a damn good deal.

btw, i totally agree to go with turbo :p

Did you know you will get a tax credit this year for %30 of the purchase price of any new car bought during 2002?

Any dealer will let you talk them down 10% off sticker. Any more than that is gonna take pliers and a shoe horn.

Go with the 1.8t. Much cheaper, easier on the gas, and lot more room for tuning.

If you so get the turbo then remember it voids your warrenty if you mod the chip. If something ever happens to your car and you have it towed in and the dealer catches on then you are screwed.

uhhh maybe that was a lowball quote, my GTI is an 84 (last year of the rabbit), but I have lurked around the A4 forums on vortex and those guys mentioned chips (neuspeed perhaps) at a lot lower than $800.

Wait until you see the GLI that comes out this month.

whats that all about? I heard about the 25th anniversary GTI being released here in limited numbers, but not a Jetta.

The Jetta wagon looks kinda cool, and there might be one w/4motion.

A vote for the turbo. The VR6 is an sturdy smooth engine but it's too heavy for a little car like that. The turbo is much better suited to the car and will handle better and "feel" more zippy. If you flog it, you could probably outperform the VR6 in the twisties, too.

VR6 is smoother, more horsepower stock, and sounds freakin' awesome. But it is heavier and more expensive. If you want to chip and RISK voiding your warranty (it's not "You will void your warranty", it depends on your dealer. Some don't care), then go for the 1.8T, it will be faster. If you want an excellent engine with excellent performance without modifying, go with the VR6. ~350 bucks will get you 210 hp and ~250 ft-lbs of torque with the 1.8T. The most popular chip mfg's are Upsolute, APR, and GIAC, Upsolute being the cheapest.

Go do some research: vwvortex forums

Another vote for the 1.8T. I have a 1.8T GTI, I love it.

Call and email all the car dealers around you to find the best price.

yes yes, go with the 1.8. That is exactly what i will be doing June 20th (when my Integra lease is up) You will pay a lot less, or have more options available to you. The ECU will easily push the already high 180hp to 200+

Here is a site for the chip:
ECU

And here are some sites for some exterior work

Here ya go

Good luck, post pics!

I would call your insurance people up and see what they think of the word TURBO before you make your choice.

Rock on!!!! The Bad Habit Rabbit!!!

Anyhoo...

The 1.8T is 150hp @ 5,800 RPM. The VR6 is 174, also at 5,800 RPM. The VR6 also has more torque.

The 1.8 is a quieter motor that is a bit smoother. The VR6 with all 6 of it's cylinders pounding away at 10.6:1 can be a bit loud at times.

It's a trade off.

Personally, I would do the 1.8T. However, I'm over 30 now. I've gotten over showing off and zipping from light to light, which is the only point I see with the extra 30hp you get. So a 2.0 does just fine for me. Although, I have to admit that as soon as I get a vacation, I'm throwing a 2 liter head and a turbo on the Rabbit, but I must admit that it is only for "I did it" reasons and not light to light asshole drags.

<edit> Missed the point of the question. :D

VALUE: Get the VR6.....

Insurance is cheaper.

It'll last longer.

It'll have a greater resale value.

That enough for you? </edit>

I just bought a 1.8T Jetta last week in Galactic Blue. I got the Sport Luxury package, Monsoon package, and Heated Seats package and after taxes, title, license, etc. it came to the high 23's.

I highly recommend the Turbo as it is very fast and can really move. Also, make sure you get the 17" wheels as they make the car look so much better. It's funny, before last week I just drove places without thinking about it (I had a 94 Celica) and now I actually look forward to getting in the car and driving it somewhere.

Have fun!
