VW GTI gears problem

so i was replacing my starter and i dropped a metal bolt inside the transmission car starts and all but now none of my gears work shifter moves indicator stuck in park can that metal bolt be the problem ?

I refuse to believe anyone would start the car and try to shift...

Then again, it seems unlikely that you were able to drop a bolt inside the actual transmission/transaxle itself.
Possibly just inside a cover or housing? A starter bolt is not going to be small.

Maybe you just knocked the shift linkage loose?
