I have a friend that scored a Corrado dirt cheap.

The Corrado is pretty much my dream car.

Problem is, this corrado was used as a parts car for a newer Golf.

The body is good, paint a little oxidized. The interior is decent. Everything is in place except for the engine.

I imagine trying to score a complete G60 would be next to impossible.

Should we just drop a 1.8 or 2.0 and maybe an aftermarket Turbo under the hood or just strip it for parts since every other Corrado out there has been driven by a snotty, spoiled kid that doesn't know how to drive responsibly so their car is banged up and parts are rare so they can be sold at a premium?

Finding a G60 shouldn't be too hard. I have seen whole, running cars for less than 2 Grand.

VWhed: I'm a member over at Vortex too. This car has NOTHING under the hood. That's my point. The guy we got it from now has a G60 Golf, if you get my drift.

I haven't seen a complete running car for $2000, but I think if I could find one that runs but got wrapped around a tree for $2000, I'd buy it. :D

Sure. But it really just looks like an oxidized red Corrado with some pimp rims and low profile tires. ;)

There's lots of possibilities. What do you want to do? Restore it or create something original? Thought about a 1.8 or 2.0 liter 16 valve? More rev happy than the other motors. You could put a 2.slow in there if you really wanted to be original. ;) Personally I'd stay away from a G60 because I don't have faith in the supercharging abilities of VW. It's not a bad motor, just I think you'd have less problems with the other motors. And the 1.8T can handle more boost. Of course that's been debated ad nauseum in the Corrado forum.

I'd go with a 12v VR6. It's a heavier engine and won't handle as well, but the sound is absolutely stunning. Auditory stimulation is a big part of the driving enjoyment, I think it's no less important than say, something like turn in or steering feedback. I believe the pre-1997 OBDI engines were a bit more tuneable, so be sure to consider that.

Kinda like, but they don't share components or chassis or anything like that. But yeah, 20v naturally aspirated inline 5. Put out 164 hp. That was alot in 1991, and from only 2.3 liters. Sounded amazing, too. My dad had the 10v 5 cylinder, and that sounded sweet enough. But had no power.

When I was saying I'd drop in a 2.0, I was speaking of the Audi bubble-block, not the current VW 2 litre. For a 1.8, I'd use a good ol' fashion 16V.

A VR6 might be out of my price range. I'm not made of money, hence the possibility of stripping the car for parts. :D

Its easy depending on your skill level;) It wasn't particularly difficult to drop an engine into my car, for example.

So I'm guessing you need a harness and all? I thought you had one with a blown engine or something. (btw: I have seen $2000 running rado's, but there aren't any on there right now ;) ) How far are you willing to drive? I can possibly locate one here in PA, but that is a long drive from FL.....
What engine do you really want? 1.8t, VR6, G60? We have some Big-azz VW salvage yards up here and the prices aren't too bad.

Ummm... It's a VW. It is easy.

I've got a 1.8 hydro-head in my '82 Rabbit and the friend with the Corrado in the backyard has a '81 Pickup with a 2.0 Audi motor in it. The only problem with the Audi motor is, as it is with most A2 and newer cars, the intake points to the passenger side instead of to the drivers side so there's no room for an airbox. But an adapter plate and a conical filter addresses that. The 2.0 liter was an ideal choice for that vehicle because the Digifant injection is more suitable to retrofit a turbo to (the CIS runs too lean under boost.) And once he found out that the Digifant wiring harness only needed two hot leads and a bunch of grounds (thank you Bentley manual) wiring it up to the old electrical system wasn't too scary either.

VWHed: Yes... EVERYTHING. Block is in it, but it's shot. Head's gone, intake and exhaust manifolds, fuel injection, ignition, wiring harness. The guy took it all. Even the rear motor mount needs to be replaced because the guy cut a chunk out of it with a saw-z-all when he needed to make some room when he replaced the G-lader with a Turbo. Basically, under the hood is a steering rack and a fuxored block held in place with two motor mounts. :D
