VW Cars

Do any of you guys own a VW and if so, are you happy with them and the service VW offers? I am looking at buying a new car and had my eye on the Tiguan. Thanks!

Garaged.

They're not junk, and they're a lot better than they were in the 80s, but still not the best build quality it must be said. Of course if you're used to American build quality it'll seem like luxury.

What do you want a runty SUV like that for anyway? Get a wagon if you need space or a proper Land Rover if you're going off road.

can't speak for anyone else but bought a 2004 jetta new, no problems so far. Needed to replace a buzzing speaker under warranty but that's it. I am at 64K miles now, change oil every 5000k with mobile 1. still have original tires, but need to change them soon. Brakes have not been squeaking or anything yet but must be getting close. This is my only VW but so far, so good.

LOVE my VW, so much I'm thinking of buying a second.

2005 Jetta TDI
139,000 miles

Thus far....

Replaced window switch. Its a 2 stage that kinda went to a 1 stage. Done under warranty.
Replaced a battery. A given.
Replaced chrome trim piece on the rear driver side door as it started to come undone. Under warranty.
Fuel pump went out 2 weeks ago.
Wheel bearing went out last week.
New chrome strip is again coming up.

The only issue that really bothers me is the trim piece. I'm a bit miffed about that but otherwise I love our Jetta. Its been nothing but dead nuts reliable and even with nearly 150k on it I would STILL get in it and not hesitate to drive anywhere in the country.

You'll get a lot of "VW SUCKS!". Interestingly enough most of it will come from people who have never put their ass in a VW.......

The head of our department has a Jetta as a company car.

It is very reliable.

(By "reliable" I mean reliably in the shop every 3 weeks)

Still driving around in my '99 New Jetta with 130k miles and no oil changes in over a year (oil has been added though). Had to replace a couple of fuses as well as coil pack, plugs, wires, etc. but nothing major

i still think VW is junk 🙂

I've owned 2 VW's one 2000, and 2003, loved both of them....

Yeah, had some issues, but its fun to drive and better value in terms of standard options.

Apparently VWs made in Mexico = meh, while VWs made in Germany =

<-- '08 VW Rabbit here. It's been great so far.

don't confuse materials with build quality. VW does not have particularly good reliability ratings. ford is whipping it like a red headed step child. but a VW sure is a nice place to sit.

They are assembled there...well they were. There is a factory beign put up in the US...I think the Mark5's are assembled in Europe somewhere...

IMO the mark4 (99.5 - 05?) are years behind the mark 5 in build quality...

I have had 4 mark 4's, and I would rather have my bosses mark 5! Granted...I have a B7 audi now

Audi > *

Aside from my shift linkage breaking at approximately 2000 miles...my 2007 GLi has been great to me. Dealership tried to pull a fast one on me, but a call to VW fixed it up. (Stay away from Koepel Mazda in LIC, Queens.)

I am thinking about an R32 in the future, or possibly an A3 with full package. 🙂

Mines had a bigass sticker saying Made in Mexico...lol

maybe I am wrong...maybe it's specific models that are made in mexico...what year, and type AMD?

EDIT : You have a GLI...I was going to get one, but I helf off for my B7 Audi instead.

A3 would be a nice upgrade for you 🙂.

Oh man, I would LOVE an RS4. The payments would kill me though. I just like the way the A3 looks when it has the S package, but I figure with the same engine, it probably wouldn't be too much of an upgrade.

I've also thought about just going ahead and modding the hell out of my GLi, since I really like it, but don't really know where to start.

how much can you spend ^_^

price-performance ratio would be telling you to get a chip first...typically improvements are 30-50hp ... then you go after a few bolt on upgrades...then bigger injectors, turbo, etc.

I've got a few grand. I only have 5100 miles on it, so I want to wait on the modding. I figure by the time I hit 12-13k on the car, then I'll be ready to start the mods. Hell, it took me 14k on my Civic before I even bought rims. 🙂

'00 Jetta 1.8T, 96k miles

Besides the water pump impeller and a turbo valve problem, no trouble except of my own fault.

Got an 08 GTI. It has treated me well thus far and a hell of a lot of fun! So far it has only needed it's oil changes. Plus the interior is sweet.

I'm pretty sure that the current Golfs are Mexico and the current Rabbits are Germany. Beyond that I don't know.
