Excerpt:

The world's most economical car is being shown to shareholders attending the 42nd annual general meeting of Volkswagen AG in Hamburg. It is a '1-liter' car, that is to say covers 100 kilometers (approximately 239 mpg) on only this amount of fuel. The prototype, built in conditions of great secrecy despite many claims that such a technological feat was impossible, was driven under its own power from Volkswagen's plant in Wolfsburg to the meeting venue in Hamburg. Dr. Ferdinand Piech, currently Chairman of the Board of Management, drove this research vehicle the whole distance on April 14th. Despite poor weather conditions, the distance was completed at what must surely be a record-breaking fuel consumption figure and is certainly almost unbelievable: only 0.89 liter per 100 kilometers. Once again, Volkswagen has demonstrated its technological leadership in a most impressive way.

<< Top Speed? >>

Dosent seem to say... All i could find was

<< Its average speed was 75 km/h (46.6 mph) >>

imagine if they could apply this technolgy to small four passanger, short to medium distance intended economy cars. It would be the revolution we've all been waiting for (at least i have). If they could keep in sub 15k US they'd probably sell millions in the europe and the developing world. The US would hate it thought due to it's fuel economy and practicallity...

<< " For example, the 1-litre car reaches a top speed of 120 km/h. "

now if i felt like converting it to mph
>>

74mph

Intersting...that should be enough for most people.

But does it take all day to get to that top speed?

Yea but i bet you cant get 239 mpg in your sleep 🙂

Obviously this car isnt meant to win any speed races, but still i think the concept itself is amazing....

I agree, a lot of people said thay no one could do this. They did. It is still a concept car though, not that I would mind having one. The cost could be trouble with all the magnesium parts, camera for backing up, using all state of the are technologies etc

<< hum... so will there be anyone still gonna buy a Hybrid or "All-Electric" cars? >>

Who knows if the'll ever actually produce such an efficient car though...

Theres a van driving in front of it, I wonder if it contributed to the fuel economy(by helping to break down the air resistance). Anyways, this sounds like the end for the hybrids.

aphex2:
heh, if that concept is the final production model, who do you think would actually buy one?
those SUV soccer-mums would CRUSH them with minimal effort. 🙂

"Hey, Jimbo, yur' can't believe what I saw out there, a giant metal roach ! let's grab our double barrels and hunt it down!"
- some rednecks after sighting the 1L Concept.

The car wasnt made to be sold, it was made to prove a point, that an extremely high efficiency vehicle could be built. As for a market, i think this car would appeal to those on a tight budget, of course not to soccer moms... I actually think this could have a larger market than some of the electric/hybrid vehicles do. Applying this technology to slightly larger cars could have astounding results.

BTW, its aphexII

I think that this proves that if the automobile industry tried, we could all have clean cars that were much better than our current ones. Let's get moving!

eh? More like it would compliment the hybrids. Hybrids will go away eventually, but that's because they'll be replaced by something else, not powered by gasoline.

The body is unpainted in order to save weight.

is this a joke? ofcourse you can get insane mpg if you slap a tiny engine on a car made of tinfoil. vw is a joke for even making this pos. honda and toyota come out with practical production vehicles, with honda just releasing its new hybrid fully functional(painted) civic.

calling that thing a car is a joke. maybe a tricycle or golf cart would be more accurate.
