Trump border patrol radio tower taken over by hundreds of vultures

Federal officials are working to address a kettle of vultures that has taken over a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) radio tower in Texas, creating what officials say is a safety hazard. The agency released a request for information (RFI) this week seeking possible solutions to the approximately 300 vultures roosting on the CBP radio towers at Kingsville, Texas. One solution includes netting to deter the birds.

"A population of vultures have built up and are roosting and nesting on the tower structure on the railings, catwalks, supports, and on rails and conduit throughout. Droppings mixed with urine are on all of these surfaces and throughout the interior of the tower where workers are in contact with it, as well as on areas below," the RFI reads.

"Since the presence of birds attract more birds this rural tower will be a frequent and constant target for vultures."

A CBP official told CNN the birds living on the structure is "generally creating a safety hazard."

"They will often defecate and vomit from their roost onto buildings below that house employees and equipment," the official said. "There are anecdotes about birds dropping prey from a height of three-hundred feet, creating a terrifying and dangerous situation for those concerned."

A report by Quartz also claims that feces from the vultures are disrupting communications by living on the tower.

Federal officials are working closely with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Texas officials, Fish and Wildlife and environmental experts to make sure no birds are harmed as the agency tries to relocate them from the towers.

Vultures are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, and the USDA notes they are known for nesting in massive numbers. The USDA also notes that the birds can seriously damage power lines and cause outages or disrupt communication when they choose to nest in such structures.

Til that the collective noun for vultures changes depending on their behaviour.

I thought it was a wake of vultures but apparently that's only when they are feeding. It's a kettle when they are flying in a group and committee if they are just hanging out!

Vulture droppings can also carry a range of diseases such as histoplasmosis, salmonella, and encephalitis.

GO VULTURES!

"One solution would be to kill one or more of the vulture flock, which is known as a “kettle.” According to AGL, a trade magazine for cell tower operators, vultures won’t congregate in an area “where one of their own has been injured or killed.”

But the Migratory Bird Treaty Act, which was first enacted in 1918, prohibits the killing of vultures, and violators can be fined up to $200,000 and receive up to a year in federal prison.

Wonder if Trump will try to repeal that..

The Trump administration already reinterpreted the act to make enforcement all but impossible. If a person took an action that could reasonably be expected to harm or kill a protected bird, the person could have been prosecuted under the act. With the Trump interpretation, the person would have to announce, “I am taking this action with intent to harm a protected bird” prior to taking the action in order to be prosecuted.

A “kettle” of vultures, eh? How did crows get the “murder” and vultures got the “kettle”? Oh well, carrion birds so I guess that makes sense.

When a herd of vultures get together they fly in big circles, at varying altitude, forming a kettle.

Starting at about 1:20 you can see the formation, er, forming.

Are vultures even endanger? I'm really surprised that Congress didn't make any exceptions for birds that caused major problems.

Curious myself. They do take out the trash in nature so to speak. Turkey vultures are all over the southeast from my experience.

Globally, vultures are in extreme danger. The U.S. vulture populations are in much better shape because we learned our lesson and stopped doing stuff to kill them.

I didn't know there was a resistance movement against CPB.
This place is a veritable wellspring of information.
