VT-d and SB-E CPUs

I have an Asus Rampage 4 Extreme with an i7 3960x CPU that I put together back in November. I just saw something about VT-d not being enabled on the first batch of CPUs. A C2 stepping came out in early 2012 to replace the early chips. I am not overclocking currently. Is the lack of VT-d a big deal for this CPU? I am not sure if this is a major issue or not. Thanks.

Or it could be put another way:

Even without VT-D, SB-E is 'just good enough'...

You see Intel are perfect, never make any mistakes, and so on. Therefore it must follow that the 'Extreme' CPU platform is 'just good enough' even with out virtualized IO.
 
Vt-D is only for I/O virtualization of certain devices. So if you dont use virtualization then it got no effect on you. Even if you do use virtualization less than 1% uses VT-D. Even in enterprise deployments VT-D is very rarely used.
 
Ha! Well, take comfort in that it's applications are obscure and if you needed it you would have been on the lookout for the feature from day 1.

If you get serious enough to really want to use it, you'll probably be considering a Xeon at that point too, so no big deal. 🙂
 
Thanks. I had seen a feedback at newegg about someone having problems with a nvidia 690 until they enabled VT-d in the bios and that's when I started looking into this feature. I was confused as to what this had to do with VT-d. I didn't think there was any connection between the two. I don't know that much about the technology here. Appreciate the help.
