Vsync still evident in games

After switching out my 8800 for a HD2900XT 1GB (Cat 7.8's) I noticed that (when using fraps) Farcry, Stalker and UT2k4 are all limited to 60FPS- yet I have Vsync disabled in game and in the CCC. My monitor is a Acer AL2416W which has a max refresh rate of 60hz if that is any help. With my 8800 Fraps said my fps were way over 60 when Vsync was disabled so I don't see why I should be limited now. Any suggestions as to how to fix this?

I'd say Fraps was lyin' to you.

Well, technically that's not correct. Your vid card may be pumping out max frame rates but at 60Hz your monitor will not display more than 60fps whether it's the 2900 or the 8800...

Actually, no, FRAPS will report the video card's internal framerate, not necessarily what the monitor is displaying. Vsync is definitely on if your games aren't showing above 60 in FRAPS.

This could be a driver issue. Are your other games capped at 60 FPS?

Yep every game I have has this limit which includes those listed above + CSS and the new Bioshock demo. You'd probably be right BFG10k in saying this is a driver issue (although its not serious) but it is something I can live with. It just came to mind that if the temporal AA threshold is as much as your monitors refresh rate, would I need 61fps in order to 'activate' temporal AA?

EDIT:
UPDATE: After closer inspection Bioshock seems to only get up near the 60FPS limit in cut scenes and pre-renders, however actual gameplay wont break 30fps even when I am staring directly at a wall to which I *should* get a big frame rate increase- what does fraps say for everyone else with Bioshock?

That's likely a vsync problem. See if the game has a triple buffering option and if it fixes it then it's definitely vsync.

Nope the problem still persists, just tried to 7.9's and still a magical 60fps limit, Vsync is off in the Stalker ini as well and it seems that when I set the refresh rate to 59hz with Vsync off I still got 60fps max, which implies that vsync is indeed off but something else is at play. Anyone else experienced this? I might reformat this weekend and start over.

UPDATE: PROBLEM SOLVED

The whole time I had AA 'forced' in the CCC, as soon as I set it to application preference the 'limit' of 60fps was removed and I was happily gaming at 60+ with 4xAA set in game so I still retained 4xAA but had to set it to app preference otherwise id get a limit, quite an odd occurrence. This holds true to all my games. I am happy I finally have an answer and I wonder if anyone else out there can replicate this.

You must've been running TAA. If you disable it you can force AA from the control panel without having vsync.
