Vsync Problems. HELP!

In FEAR and Half Life 2 I am having problems with screen tearing. I have dual eVGA 7800GT's in SLI. See my sig for the rest of my system specs.

In FEAR my video settings are at max except for soft shadows which are off and volumetric lighting which is at medium. Im running an 1152x864 resolution and 4xAA and 16xAF. Im not sure why FEAR uses such unorthodox resolutions. I tried running the 1920x1200 native res of my monitor but at max settings I get choppy framerate when vsync is on. In HL2 I am running 1920x1200 res, all settings at max and 4xAA with 8xAF.

In both games those settings run completely smooth. At those settings I get 90-100FPS in HL2, and 50-60FPS in FEAR. With vsync on in FEAR my FPS drops to the low 30's and is pretty choppy for my tastes. With AA at 2x or off the frame rate improves but without AA in FEAR the textures look way too jagged for me. Im not sure how low the framerate drops in HL2 with vsync on but it gets kind of choppy and Im not crazy about it.

I've turned triple buffering on in the nVidia control panel which I read should help, but it hasn't helped any. Is there anything else I can do to make the tearing go away besides just turning on vsync or lowering the performance settings? Like I said both games run awesome at those settings aside from the screen tearing.

No other games seem to have this problem except for FEAR and HL2. Quake 4 and Doom 3 will run at the 1920x1200 native res of my monitor with all settings at max and 4xAA and I get a consisent FPS of 50-60 all the time with absolutely no tearing and vsync off. I read that Quake 4 and Doom 3 have thier FPS capped at 60 anyway.

So what can I do for HL2 and FEAR to make this screen tearing better? Tweakguides.com didn't really have any info on this problem so I'm hoping someone here can help.

Thanks in advance.

There's nothing you can do except to turn v-sync on. There's no way around it.

I can't play anything with V-Sync off because I can spot a tear from a mile away. Some people don't notice it or it doesn't bother them.

Well no ****** Sherlock. I was just wondering if there was some setting either in the configuration files of the game or in the nVidia control panel that I could adjust to avoid the framerate killer - a.k.a vsync.

Try using DXTweaker to force triple buffering on. However, last I checked, vsync and SLI don't cooperate in FEAR at all with the default AFR mode. It works in SFR, but there are some graphical glitches in that mode.

Im actually using the new 82.12 beta drivers. I read that they have better support for dual-core CPU's so I installed them. I haven't tried going back to the othe drivers but thats a good idea. I forgot that I had the beta drivers installed.

Hey Pez, I'm also using the Beta 82.12 with F.E.A.R and there seems to be no way around the screen tearing even with V-Synce enabled and AFR, at least for me anyway?? I got so tired of looking at the tearing that I just switched back to single GPU rendering in F.E.A.R. only.. This is the only game that gives me problems with V-Sync and AFR in SLI??? Sucks big time........
