VSOP, XO....

Modeps

Lifer
I've only ever had Hennessy VSOP, but I'm thinking on trying some others... My big question though is what the heck is the deal with titles VSOP and XO? Dose anyone recommend any specific Cognac?

There is a definite quality difference between the VS and VSOP, the VSOP is smoother and tastes better. I haven't tried any XO yet, but my friend has some Remy XO which I will sample sometime soon.

XO is Extra Old.

I prefer Hennessy over Remy, and I've tried Cordell cognac it was ok.

its number of years that the cognac has been aged.

vsop is minimum 4 years, xo is minimum 6 years.

The very top of the line cognac is supposedly Remy Martin Louis XIII at a whopping 1300 to 1800 a bottle. but if you wanna drink the drink that Winston Churchill had when celebrating the allied victory at WWII, then go right ahead.

For more plebian consumption, I've heard Martell brand cognac also recommended. Aside from remy martin, hennesy, Martell, you also have Courvoisier of Busta Rhyme fame.

happy drinking.

I hate Courvoisier it's overhyped crap

never had it, just listing all the options. It being overrated is probably not too far off the mark.

To the OP, if you are going to start drinking cognac though, make sure that you first know how to serve it. It should be served warm (either by using a brandy snifter on top of a low flame or if you want you can try to warm it by your hands)

Its a big waste if you are going to pour it over ice or something.

Like, its a big waste if you are going to pour it over ice or something.

Yes.... do not, i repeat do not put ice in cognac, technically you're supposed to drink it at room temp, and not cold, since all the aroma/flavor is brought out when warm and tollaly supressed with chilling.

Also don't mix nice cognac with Coke, nothing is worse that a guy who buys a $50 bottle of cognac and mixes it with $.99 coke....

Oooohh.. Cognac makes my eyes go funny, and steam come from my ears...

Good drink, but not something I can indulge in very often..

The only time I've had it was in a snifter, I felt like an old man, but when it went down, for some reason I felt like just curling up in a ball and going to bed hehe. It forced my eyes closed somehow... I liked it quite a bit!

Thanks for all the info everyone, it's good to know even if I cant afford the Remy Louis XIII
