VSO ConvertX, How Many Cores?

Hi.

I am unclear re how many cores to set VSO ConvertXtoDVD to use in this new/used system in video encoding. I have it set on 6 (just felt right)......average fps is just over 250, but sometimes much higher, the CPU usage is around 21%, ram usage is around 2.49 GBs (out of 8)

This is Lynnfield i7 870 2.93.

I never did understand this how many cores to set it on issue, even when I had only two, now time for me to get clear on it.

Thank you.

Quad with HT, right?
A virtual core/HT thread is worth about 0.5 core, so 6 sounds right.
You could try with 8 and compare times against the 6.

Stock u could try 8.
Overclocked stick to 6.

Yes, HT/Turboboost both on in bios, I should have said.

I think I will leave it on 6. Changing it to 8 just feels mean. I know, irrational, but is true!:sneaky🙁)🙂

Good idea, tho, re testing it with 8.

Thanks!!!!!

No different than running Prime95 with all thread HT on for an hour - ConvertXtoDVD takes less than an hour for video transcoding.

Actually VSO doesn't stress out a system that much at all go ahead and do 8 threads.

Sothink HD movie maker on the other hand will bring a system to it's knees - I've passed P95 and IBT max b4 on my overclocked 3770k just to require .02v more to keep Sothink from crashing.

Thanks for this. I never used other than VSO, but if it ain broke why try to fix it? And, even in the system I just moved up from, PD, 3.40.....it still converted say an 800 MB file in under and hour, tho with the CPU at like 85-90%.. and, of course, couldn't do much else during converting. Now it does it in like 20 mins and I can do anything I want at the same time.

I feel better now about the cores and overloading them......so, will set it on 8. 😀
