VR Gaming Rig ~ 2.5k

Dr. Zaus

Lifer
Tasks: Oculus Rift
Price: 2,400 - 2700
Location: US
Not a fan boy, New build, Looking for a 4k display (or 3)
Build time: Tax return, apx 3/30
Note: We don't need to subtract the $600 for the Oculus from the 2,200-2600. If I should be getting the HTC Vive at $800 instead, then subtract 200, and if I should get the HTC Vive along side the Rift then subtract $800. I'm open to suggestions in this regard too.

My thoughts so far (still needs monitor & power supply):
380 - Intel Core i7-6700K 8M Skylake Quad-Core 4.0

995 - x2: EVGA GeForce GTX 980
(Intending SLI, not sure about MB compatibility)

310 - x3 Silicon Power Slim S55 2.5" 480GB SATA III
(Intending RAID 5)

110 - ASRock Z170 Pro4S LGA 1151

190 - G.SKILL TridentZ Series 32GB (4 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200

130 - Corsair Carbide Series Air 540

XXX - Power Supply

XXX - 4k Monitor (or 3)

Price:
2115

2160x1200 at 90mhz is going to take a bit more grunt than 980 SLI will provide in certain games. Depends on how much eye candy you want to turn on. Oculus forums talking SLI 980ti for best results.

I just caught up on the state of video cards and processors and such.

For the better part of a decade it has felt like constant lateral moves, but with the advent of 4K gaming: and how oddly similar the present processing demands are for VR, it looks like we're moving toward a discontinuity: including a massively improved SLI system under DX12.
