Hi,
As a home computer user of one machine, Id like to ask if VPN would benefit me to securely look after my online activity. The jargon is technical. So a few words in regard to Yes it is very secure and safe option, or dont bother, a firewall is sufficient? Also, if using the TOR software and VPN is good advice, will TOR conflict with VPN config?

Im thinking especially about the free VPN client " Logmein Hamachi " ?

Regards,

Berne^_^

A VPN really isn't going to do anything for you unless you are trying to access your 1 computer remotely from work for example.

if you want to transfer files (for example from your computer to you phone) through the internet, or have remote access in a secure manner (encryption), then yes.
Otherwise it's useless.
Hamachi is cool to play multiplayer lan games though

I wouldn't bother using vpn anyway, unless you have secret business documents or illegal pictures that need to be accessed from outside your lan.

TOR is just an anonymizing software afaik, it puts you behind a random proxy.

Ok, thank you, not much use for my basic IT requirements, still one day it maybe useful.

I'm not sure you quite understand the concept of a VPN still. A VPN establishes an end to end connection tunnel through the internet which all or part of your traffic goes through.

VPN access would be useful for accessing files on a company LAN away from the physical company or transferring files securely from 1 point to another. A VPN would do nothing for you unless you want to connect remotely to your computer for some reason.

Hi,
Well to clarify, VPN is an excellent option for those who need to access their computer remotely or to transfer files at different locations from A to B, but for me at this time its not a required option, useful though it is.

Many thanks ,
