I just bought into Personal Internet Access and am using their client. When I try to connect domestically there's no issue, however if I pick from their overseas list I do connect however my local IP shows when I check it on line.

The client defaults to UDP and "auto" for remote port. Their help desk had me change from auto and try each specific remote port, which I did. Same issue. Domestic works fine, overseas doesn't.

I then tried their next suggestion and repeated the above process but changed from UDP to TCP. Nada.

Lastly I changed the local port to 53 while staying with TCP. Nope again.

Since I know next to nothing about networking I'm lost.

If it's relevant-

Windows 7 ultimate
Time Warner is the provider
Router is Ubee DVW 3201B

Any ideas?

Check what routes you have in windows,

cmd

route print | more

The default route should be the first route under ipv4

Destination 0.0.0.0 Netmask 0.0.0.0 Gateway (Should be the other side of the tunnel's ip) Interface (The ip address of you vpn addapter).

If the gateway is still your local network's gateway, then the vast majority of traffic is going out of your network in the same manner it always has.

Might want to check and see if there is a way to disable split tunneling in the client, otherwise you can manually add a route to windows, but this might be tedious.

Edit
Just checked and PIA seems to use OpenVPN by default so this should all be accurate. Make sure you can ping through the tunnel, if you can it's most likely this routing issue.

It's called Private Internet Access not Personal Internet Access. PIA's client sucks balls and is a PITA with software based firewalls and some anti-virus software. You may want to try OpenVPN instead of PIA's client. Even OpenVPN can be hit and miss with PIA. When my three months are up I'm moving to VPN.ac. PIA's OpenVPN doesn't even use AES, but Blowfish 128. Pretty lame.

I have experienced PIA's client to thrash on the HDD and so have others checking their forum. So I just don't have the client start with windows and use OpenVPN.

I'll try to connect to some other countries and see what happens and post here. I haven't done that yet.

Log in, grab the credentials for OpenVPN. Let me know if you need help on setting up OpenVPN for PIA. I can tell you how to have your username and password used automatically in the OpenVPN. https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/client-support/#windows_openvpn

I was able to connect to Germany and France with the PIA client. I used DNSleaktest to confirm. You should change your home page to https://www.dnsleaktest.com that way you know you are really connected every time you connect.

Let us know. I haven't seen any of the issues John is referencing on the Windows x64 PIA client. I use it on a Laptop and a desktop. I also use PIA in Ubuntu 14.04 and haven't seen any issues, and on my wife's droid phone it works fine.

I've only used PIA servers outside of the USA to watch the world cup this past summer. connected to the UK servers. worked fine.
