I have a computer that I would like to be able to connect to using VPN / Remote Desktop.
Since I do not want to spent the cash to get a fixed IP on my SBC DSL, I was wondering if there are any programs that I could use to look up the external IP address remotely?

I don't know any program that can look up the external IP of your remote site, but you can use dyndns.org and register a name w/ them. That way, you can use a fixed domain name for the VPN.

You can not find the IP from remote because you do not know what to look for.

It is like trying to put the money into a drawer after you close it.

As indicated above you can use DNS, or you can install a program that would email the IP to an external email address.

Dynamic DNS service. Most routers now run a few different dynamic DNS services and will auto upate. Once you have an account with the service, you will have a name like "xxxx.dyndns.org" - this is the pointer to your computer on the Internet. When your IP changes, the router then lets the DNS company know and it updates.

In terms of VPN, I am not sure if SBC still allows them on residential lines. At one point they did, however in the past all encrypted traffic was banned. I had a hell of a time setting one up a month ago, but it is most likely an issue with my router. I just use a SSH connection from my laptop now to encrypt RDP traffic - more secure than a VPN anyways.
