VPN on windows 7 Logon Domain?

What does the "Logon Domain" actually do? I mean whats the point in it if you are already part of the domain and are dialing in via vpn? Creating some cmak profiles and just wondering if I need to put our domain in there or not.
 
In confederated forests, you might not be logging in to a domain that VPN server or client are members of. The VPN needs to know where to authenticate the user from. This only matters if the user is not in the same domain as the client / vpn server as it would be assumed to be the same domain as the client machine.

The VPN server will not start searching all domains because bsmith could be bsmith@coke.local or bsmith@pepsi.local and it wouldn't know how to tell them apart.
