Here's the setup. Two distant office locations with LANs on each side. I want to connect both thru VPN. Both offices have DSL connectios, but with dynamic IPs. Static IPs ar unavailable with our current ISP/Telco. What do I need? (a VPN enabled router on each side sounds good)
I've never set up a VPN, so I'm completely clueless. Any help will be very much appreciated.

Well, I've setup a VPN or two. We'll need a little more details on the offices. Like are how large is each office LAN. Have you done a basline on the DSL connection? Also, are the office lans running 2000/XP/98/Linux/Max? Its going to really suck if you have a dynamic IP, you'll probably have to setup with a dynamic DNS service (theres a bunch of free ones) but that means you can expect a little bit of downtime when your IP changes.

The reason i ask if you have baselined your DSL connection is because if you have a large lan, theres probably already a ton of traffic across the DSL, and a VPN would put a ton more.

Are the offices in a directory structure, Active Directory, Netware? What servers do you have running? WINS? DNS?

Ya, i know its alot of info, but it really helps to know it.

Lets see...
Both offices consists of around 15 clients. It's a mixed environmet, with Windows 2000, NT4 and 98.
Currently, both of them are sharing internet access with (I think) WinGate. We're planning on purchasing two routers to make thing more easy. There's no active directory setup.
Regarding LAN traffic, it mostly consists of internal messaging and some printing. WWW access is not very high, the most used service is email.
The main reason we want to VPN both offices is file sharing.

I hope this is allowed but there is a forum called TekTips that has a forum specifcally for VPNs.
TekTips VPN Forum

That is where i found alot of my info.
VPNs can be complicated as can be. Especially LAN2LAN ones. Basically, you'll need to setup a firewall/router with IPSEC passthrough or even one that is a VPN server. On both networks you'll need to run DNS or WINS. The hardest part is getting computers from one LAN to see computers on another LAN through network neighborhood. I used the Netopia router, its a great litter router at a GREAT price i think it was the R1200 or something like that. You might want to look into them.
