A friend and me are trying to learn VPN. I've been reading as much as I can on the internet and in book stores, but we must be missing something.

We both are on dialup. I'm running Win2000 Pro. He's running XP Pro. We both have dynamic IPs which we give each other. We have each set up a server and a client on our boxes. He has no firewall while I have ZoneAlarm Pro. I change ZoneAlarm to trust his IP (and change again each time his IP changes). We each have set user accounts up for each other. We have checked our the properties of the incoming and outgoing connections against each other and can find no differences. At this point we could ping eash other but no VPN. QoS packet scheduler was installed on his but not mine so I installed it. At that point my client was able to connect to his server and showed up as such on his box. He was still not able to connect to me. He only has one computer but I have several on a single network with one box being a DHCP server handing out private IPs. I do not have Internet Connection Sharing turned on.

The goal is for him to be able to use my network (not just one box) as if he were local, but since we're learning, it's ok for me to get into his box also. What should we try next? Should I have been able to see the drives on his box when I connected?

Thanks

Thanks for the reply. I have looked at those sites. I still don't see what I'm doing wrong. Should I be able to see the hard drive or anything else when I connect to his box?

You mentioned that you are using private IP's. If this is the case, then he will not be able to initiate a VPN connection to your computer unless you set up port forwarding on your NAT router. I believe the port on which VPN servers listen for connections is 1723. Hope this helps.

There are no routers on our networks. We are using a modem with public IP on each end connected to the internet. We are now able to to connect both ways through the VPN. The only change was deleting a user account and then add the user back in. We thought we would be able to see something on the computer we were connected to, but nothing there. We have shared drives on both computers and file and print sharing is on.

How do we get access to the each others networks so that we can manage all the computers on that network?

i learned alot about VPNs by making routers myself using linux/unix. youll also learn alot about *nix too.
