vpn help on freeswan

I'm trying to setup a vpn between my office, and home.
office has a zywall 10 which supports a vpn connection to freeswan.
I put together an old box with smoothwall at home.

I think i'm getting stuck at the "next hop" thing.

if I do a traceroute from home to the office shouldn't I get the same response (but reversed) as if I did a traceroute from the office to home?

should the next hop be the first ip address after my local router?

I believe that you need to let FreeS/WAN fill in "next hop" for you unless you have good reason to do otherwise. If you really want to fill it in yourself, I believe that it is the address of the gateway on your route to the destination (in practice, the default route's gateway).

traceroute in and out will give you different results because they're seeing different interfaces on the same router.
