can anyone provide a recommendation for a good and SIMPLE VPN solution for my Uncle's medical practice.

Requirements are as follows.

1. VPN Server
2. Windows 2000 / XP user integration
3. Idiot proof client software
4. Simple Server installation

It can be either some piece of software - or a good router / vpn / firewall solution.

Budget is maximum $500.

thanks in advance

check out www.sonicwall.com

You *might* be able to get their entry level VPN device and a 5 client global VPN software license for around that price... maybe a tad more. Their product is pretty reliable though and the client software is pretty darn easy to setup. (add fqdn of vpn device + enter your encryption key = done)

http://www.sonicwall.com/products/tz150.html

Price Range: $216.00 - $370.00

We have a few of the earlier models (soho3) connecting 3 offices and supporting 10 or so vpn clients.

If you have a Windows server at the office you can just run the RRAS and have your own pptp vpn that is fully integrated into windows. Is this not an option?

Another one I've had good luck with is monowall running on a WRAP board or really any PC with a couple NICs will work. It can easily authenticate against active directory as long as you configure the Internet Authentication Service IAS.

Edit: For both of these there is no client installation on Win2k and higher.

Cisco Pix and setup IAS on the server. Setup client to VPN to authenticate to the RADIUS server. You can control user access through Remote Access Policy. This also lets remote users connect using domain credentials rather then you having to create new accounts locally on the PIX.
