VPN connection is killing entire house's internet connection

I often use a work-issued VPN without issue.

Recently I've been trying "private internet access" for home use. No problems for the last few days but now today shortly after turning it on (few minutes, even) and without doing much else beyond a little web surfing, I've found that not only do I lose internet connection to my laptop (wifi connection to router, which is plugged into cable modem), but the modem itself requires a hard reboot, after starting to flash an error message.

Seems very strange, either my ISP is not enjoying this VPN or the cable modem isn't, or something else? Finding it hard to believe it's coincidence at this point, as it happens so soon after starting the VPN connection.
