Question: my work server is set up so we can use VPN to connect to it. I didn't go to the VPN tutorial and know nothing about it. I heard that I would have to install java so I didn't go. Is it possible to use a non-java VPN client and just copy the VPN settings that I need so I could VPN into the work server?
 
Not all vpn client software uses java, but the one your IT department supports does, so I would go with that.
 
If you are that worried about Java, just set yourself up a VM that you only use to VPN to the office.
