vpn client stopping local network connection

hi. i have a vpn connection which i use to connect to my university, but i also remote desktop to the computer that i use to connect to my vpn and when i do this, my remote desktop connection stops working. is their a way to make it so i can still connect to my uni via the vpn, yet still let my computer access the local network??

that is VPN specific, and almost all VPN's are configured this way. There is a reason, it's a big security hole otherwise.
