VPN Assistance

Okay, not sure if this can be done.

I have 2 Win7 Ultimate computers. I have a Linksys WRT54G hooked to the desktop.

I would like to create a VPN connection between the two computers for using terminal services over the net wherever I happen to be.

The second system is a laptop.

Can this be done without additional hardware?

I thought I would need a linux box at home or something, but I haven't looked into this in quite a while so maybe things have changed.

Basically, is there a software that will do both Host/Client work?

RDP has been encrypted for versions now.

I understand that. But you asked for terminal services, which is RDP. If you want a real VPN so that you can map drives, printers, etc then that's obviously something else.

Cisco used to make software that allowed for software-gate VPNs. But I have not used it or seen it in a couple of years. The software created a tunnel to the firewall, then you launched whatever else you wanted.

Nothing else, buy the commercial version of RealVNC and its supposed to come with encryption.

I want to run RDP through a VPN.

Which is redundant and unnecessary. If you just want to use remote desktop, just use RDP directly.

However PPTP has security issues and after you connect the VPN you'll still have to startup your RDP client and login again making extra work for yourself.

If your dead set on an extra layer of encryption, you can first setup an SSH tunnel into your home PC, and then RDP from there. The only port you'll need to forward to your router is whatever you decide to use for SSH (can set to a non-standard to keep the script kiddies / port scanners away).

dd-wrt on the router. use PPTP and reserve an ip or three and setup a login/password.

then the outside computer can vpn into the network. it's 1000% easy to do pptp and the iphone works fine with it too.
