This is a pretty interesting topic that a friend and I were going to set up. I wanted to know if anyone has any advice, comments, or experience doing this:

We want to use VPN to connect our computers, with the ultimate result being to have a long distance LAN and be able to play games as if on a lan. My friend will be the VPN host, and he has 1 WinXP Pro machine, and a linux box. He has ADSL w/ a Cisco 678 router. I have a WinXP home machine running on a different ADSL router (which i know supports at least PPTP VPN, from personal experience w/ work).

Any ideas, links, or information that would be helpful in this project?

Thanks a TON!

. . . is refering to connecting as a client.

From what I understand you have to use IP Masquerading for linux to get it to work. We haven't tried anything yet. What all ports on the the server side ADSL router will need to be open for it to work? Or do you need a more sophisticated router ;-)?

btw, I'm the friend that joeld is working on this with.
