Ok, I managed to setup a vpn with 2k advanced server. Once I connect to the vpn though, I can't "browse", I have to "add a network place" or map a network place to a drive, rather than just bum around and see who's connected. It's fine as long as I know the names of every shared folder, or just connect to \d$ as admin. But now I want to let a couple other people have access, and I don't want to have to have them add a new network place for every shared folder, and there's no way I'm going to give them admin rights.... so how do I do this thing???
It seems like I might be able to do this by using active directory, but I have no idea what that entails, or how I should use it. I looked into MS help and it mentions something about setting the computer up as a daughter DNS server... umm... which sounds like something I don't need or want.... ahh...hopelessly noob.
another weird thing... I want to be able to share files on the server itself on the vpn. I figured the only way to do that is to have the server connect to its own vpn (which gives it a second ip address, presumably the only one that will be visible to people on the vpn). After doing this I connected another workstation on the same network to the vpn. The result was that I lost all ability to surf the net while connected to the vpn. As soon as I disconected the server from its own vpn, the other workstation could be on the vpn and surf the net simultaneously....hopeless noob... again!
A little info on the setup: The server running the vpn and doing the vpn routing, is itself one of four pcs on my home network connected to my router/switch that does the real routing on the network. Having the server connected in this way seems to be the root of a lot of problems... but whatever.
Anyway, appreciate any expertise you guys have to offer. 😀
