Page 12 - Seeking answers? Join the AnandTech community: where nearly half-a-million members share solutions and discuss the latest tech.

P&N Moderators need to make the following their top priority in the near-term:

  • Issues relating to thread creation (thread title, OP dialogue, flamebaiting, etc)

  • Insults/Personal Attacks/Flaming/Flamebaiting/Inflammatory rhetoric

  • Discrimination/Bigotry/Prejudice (race, age, creed, religion, sexual orientation, etc)

  • Thread-crapping/Derail/Off-topic/Trolling/Logical Fallacies/Misinformation

  • Other (see my post in this thread)

How about if you call someone a racist because you dont like their opinion, either you prove it, or get a 30 day ban.

I've already noticed great improvement on the forums so far.

For example, someone posted a personal attack post on me that had no other content, the moderators came in (no banning or anything but words), and then things improved a lot from there and the discussion went back to the issue at hand. I think that in the older days, things would have spiraled out of control into a flame war, maybe I would have contributed to the personal insults in defense, too. However, now things are much better and those of us who are civil and respectful will not have to stand idle and just take the abuse of personal attacks over and over again.

Really?

Who attacked you and what Mod did the right thing?

How would someone go about 'proving' this? Maybe we should start enforcing the rules against saying racist things on here more stringently as well. (we would start losing a lot of people if we did though)

With evidence in a post. Why would you think someone is a racist without evidence of it anyway?

I'm willing to bet that what constitutes evidence would be highly debatable, making it pretty purposeless. Lots of people on here say racist things that they don't realize are racist.

Maybe you can give a specific example? You don't have to name names. Racism is a quite specific idea:

a belief that race is the primary determinant of human traits and capacities and that racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race

I don't deny there have been racist comments here but I would dispute that they're frequent.

Also, in this day and age, racism is generally intentional. The age where old people say things out of a lack of contact with a certain race is coming to a close. If someone doesn't know they're racist, denies being racist, perhaps you should take a closer look at whether they're really racist.

The same could be said of the religious bigots, in fact you can just look at some thread titles. What are there about 6 or so on the first page?

Actually racism isn't quite a specific idea at all. Go look around the internet and I'm sure you can find a half dozen or more different definitions. (which is also part of the problem)

I'm not going to search for them now, but on a good number of occasions I have seen people make comments I consider to be racist, particularly in threads about poor people or those on public assistance. I feel like a bunch of those people probably don't even realize they are being racist, but they are nonetheless.

Well those posts would constitute racism if you're being fair about it (although the idea that you don't seem to be happy with a definition from a reputable source (Merriam-Webster) is trouble.

What I'm saying is that I can supply you with 4 or 5 other definitions from reputable sources that are different. Hell, Merriam-Webster lists 2 definitions itself.

I don't want to derail this thread so I'm going to end it with this. I am looking at various definitions and they're not that far apart. It just seems like you're trying to set up a situation where nobody can be ever be proven wrong for calling someone a racist. Racism involves making a statement about race and saying one is better or that someone is the way they are primarily because of their race. The issue here is not whether people have made racist comments on P&N. The issue is that you should be able to point to examples when you accuse someone of being a racist.

Well, we'll agree to disagree. The definitions are miles apart, ranging anywhere from an outright belief in rule by the superior race to simple prejudice. I am quite certain that what one person considers racist another person will not, which is the whole problem.

On a side note the misinformation one is almost laughable. Were does one get information . Main stream media that really is ignoring world events . Is this a GOOD source . Hell NO. There are 2 sides to every story . Just because one chooses one over the other doesn't make it truthful information.
