This area I am in has a lot of highly educated people and tend to be tech saavy. This is due to the majority of people moving here for tech or pharmaceutical jobs, or because of the plethora of well known colleges.

I'm talking about the Triangle area of North Carolina. Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill. The great RTP!

But I can't find any local discussion board for here!

So, like I always do, I'm going to start one up, then probably let it sit stagnant for a few years until the domain expires. ;)

I haven't actually looked any of these domains up yet.

edit:
Okay, well to get this site up and running I went ahead and defaulted to rtpforums.com for now. Any locals to the area, please join and say hi. :)

Um... We already have Craig's list and myspace, why do we need another social bulletin board?

It's not about the domain name. It's about the community and site structure itself. The design.. domain name doesn't make a difference at all

They both suck as far as boards go.

Domain name does make a difference when starting out.

rtpboards.com or rtptalk.com (which is my fave but it's taken).

So talkrtp.com isn't the better choice of the poll options?

I like triangleforums.com as if you have RTP some might think it singles out only those that work there or live near there. Triangle reachs much more.

I live in Cary and work in RTP so thats my 2 cents.

Do you like triangleforums.com the best out of the other alternatives, such as triangleboards, trianglechat, triangletalk, trianglediscussion, trianglemeet, triangleblahblah, etc.?

Yea as it gets to the point of what it is and is not to wordy. I do like thet having RTP is easy to remember.

Why not have both? 1 with RTP the other with triangle but have them direct to the forum site? Then when/if 80%+ use 1 name to get to the site stick with that one.

Then I'd have to advertise both, and if google crawls both, it will screw up the index really bad.

How would the index get screwed up if on URL only points to the 'real' site?

When you use two different domains on the same site - once you've navigated to that site, all of your pages use that domain. Unless you use a redirect either through your site console or with htaccess. When googlebot crawls both domains, it will treat each as as separate site. When it finds that both sites have the same pages, it will penalize both of them for being spammy.

I've never worried much about advertising. I don't see myself making any kind of profit on this, its jut for fun, so I'm hoping it builds itself.

I'm still trying to grasp this....

I think I understand how google would interpret that there are two sites that are exactly the same if you have a domain pointing to the site that is a different domain.

But why would using a redirect either through your site console or with htaccess not cause the same problem?

By the way, how else do you redirect besides through your site console or with htaccess?
