Afghans vote, ready or not
Most Afghans are clearly enthusiastic about this election. Some 10.6 million are registered to vote in a country believed to have only 28.7 million people - and many say they will cast their vote no matter what the risk. Yet it is still not certain that the Afghan people know what they are getting into. Democracy is a way of life, a rock pile of rights and responsibilities that people will either build into a foundation for society, or will leave as a pile of rocks. Are the Afghan people - who have a centuries-old feudalistic culture where decisions are made by tribal chiefs and kings - ready for democracy?
It's worth clicking the link just to see the picture and caption at the top of the page. :D

I'm curious - is this on cable news at all? Someone snaked my newspaper today (durned kids!), but I haven't read anything about it there either. It's certainly not on the local news.

What do you want to bet they vote for the most extreme Muslim group :)? Democracy sucks when people don't agree with you and feel the need to force their beliefs on you.

About this being on the news: I doubt it is. Remember, it was Iraq that attacked us, not Afghanistan

Yeah...NY Times had an article recently with a picture of the ballot boxes being hauled over land. Rather odd juxtaposition. :)

I'll look for it this weekend. They probably will say something when the vote is taking place or after its done.

It's news when it's done. Not like the whole thing isn't predictable.

Yeah, the donkey hauling ballots through a river is why I chose that particular link over others. :p

I'm thinking about getting cable just so I have some TV news. The paper and local news are both centered around local events. I guess they don't have room to talk about national events, since they have so many murders and such here every day.

The reception I get for PBS is terrible, and I don't get C-SPAN at all. I get 139857139857319587 zillion home shopping networks though.

Not a lick of violence. THis is how it's supposed to work. And to think a few short years ago, this was the most oppressive nation on the planet.
