Vostro 460 won't POST with 7770 installed...

I'm trying to put a 7770 in a Dell Vostro 460 and I'm not having any luck...I'm hoping I'm missing something obvious and someone will enlighten me.

Vostro 460 Specs:

i5-2400
4gb
64 bit Win 7 Pro
350 PSU
1 PCIe 2.0 slot

I bought a Power Color 7770 to play some older games. When I installed it in the computer, the comp wouldn't POST. All the fans were running though.

My first thought was that was to try the card in a different computer. I happened to have access to a 2nd Dell 460 with same the same specs except it already had a discrete GPU installed and running. I believe it's a HIS 5450...

The card wouldn't POST in the 2nd Vostro 460 either. At this point I ASSumed the card was DOA, so I exchanged it.

The replacement card wouldn't post in either computer either.

I then switched out the PSU to a 500w Enhance ENP-5150GH and still no luck.

Then I tried updating the bois from A03 to the most current A06...another bust.

I can't find any updated MOBO drivers on Dell's site...

Could it be an issue with the card being PCIe v3 and the MOBO being v2? From what I understand it should be backwards compatible.

Would it be a waste of time uninstalling the Intel drivers first? I've never had to do that in the past...

Suggestions welcome!

Thanks,

L.J.

If they were Windows 8 machines I'd suggest turning off secure boot:

However your machines are running Windows 7. I checked the service manual and there does not appear to be a bios option regarding onboard/PCIe Video, but you might want to check for that anyway.

Is the "power good" LED in the back lighting up?
There are no beep codes?

I couldn't find anything about graphics in either bois...this is the best I can up with regarding the mobo.

There is an ongoing thread in Intel forums where some users can't get to work Gtx 7xx series cards on Z68 chipset.Though you have a H67 chipset and radeon card I won't be surprised if it is the same issue. Please post it in the Intel forums.

Those Dell H67 Express mobos wouldn't post with Nvidia 600 series cards for a long time, too.

Trying updating the BIOS.

Edit: Sorry, just re-read your post. I see you already did.

If it is this card:

http://www.powercolor.com/Global/products_features.asp?id=392#Specification

Your power supply may not be adequate for this card. This page lists 450 min. A power supply in an OEM is not very good at providing the power it lists, let alone providing for a device that requires more.

That 450 watt is a very conservative recommendation. A good quality 350 watt power supply should run that card, but I an not sure what the quality of a Dell Vostro power supply is. I have an XPS, and that power supply is pretty decent, but I dont know about the 350 watt.

Even if the power supply is inadequate, as long as the six pin connector is attached, the computer should boot, I would think, as the power supply would use very little power unless under heavy load.

I thought I should put a bow on this...it turns out this issue was with EUFI. The solution was to contact Sapphire and ask for a non-EUFI compliant bios which they sent me. If fixed my problem.

Dell and the GPU manufacturers should add that info to their FAQ's if they haven't already. That's a new one to me and I would bet that there are tons of people having the same problem. I doubt Dell will pony up and add bios updates to every comp that needs it, but it would probably save a ton of RMA's and tech support calls to address it in some official manner.

Sorry to necro an old thread but I just snagged a pair of these Vostro 460's for ridiculously cheap and encountered the same problem - it doesn't seem to like AMD cards!

I have an old Radeon 4350 which works.
Geforce 420 works.
Radeon 7470 does NOT work or POST
Radeon R9-270 w/ 6-pin power does not work or POST.
In both cases, they get power and fan spins, but nothing but black screen via any connector, no HDD activity.

So far I'm not finding any users commenting on this elsewhere but I'll keep digging. I'm hoping something like a GTS 750TI will still work OK. If this turns out that it's a PCIe16 1 vs. 2 thing, and that it doesn 't like ANY card from Radeon 7xxx and newer, I guess I'll have to dig into old stuff. :(

*sigh* When is a deal NOT a deal... when it gives you stupid headaches like this.
