Vostro 1500 cpu upgrade help

I have a vostro 1500 and im trying to install a spare p8600 cpu i have. but i cant get it to even start. its the same p socket type and fits in perfectly but it only flashes the power light then goes off. nothing comes on screen. any idea if i need a certain bios or will it just not work at all.

Vostro 1500
core 2 duo t5270
8400m gpu
2gigs of ddr2 ram
pm965 chipset
bios version A06
