I didn't dig anything up in a search. here's a low-tech portable storage device w/mp3 playback. Can use your own notebook drive or buy pre-installed. Cater's to the digital photography/memory card crowd.

Vosonic X's Drive Pro

Prices from one site.

Of particular interest for digital photographers is the multiple memory card slots for versatile offloading data from memory cards so one can continue shooting. Price per MB of storage with this device is phenominally inexpensive compared to additional memory card storage.

From just a quick glance, the thing looks huge and the battery life is rated at only 2 hours! (and people complain about the Ipod's battery) :Q It doesn't look very impressive to me.

Agreed. Not so much impressive compared to IPOD run time for .mp3 playing but more functional than IPOD for data storage and transfer cost/per MB. Built-in Memory Card slots. Two hours of offloading memory cards is more than adequate. Being that it can play .mp3's is a bonus.

Consider the least expensive IPOD (10GB) is approx. $300.00 and requires an $100.00 adapter to read memory cards and at that point becomes much more bulky than the X Pro. The least expensive Xs Pro (20GB) is approx. $230.00 with the 40GB at less than $300.00.

Those are pre-configured prices; so you can use your own 2.5" drive if you have one handy and pay about $100.00. In this respect, you're only limited in storage capacity by the size of drive you install.

This is certainly not a direct competition device to the IPOD and or Dell box but for Digital Media buffs who employ memory cards and or have a notebook drive handy it's an exceptional solution.
