Voodoo5500 installation causes win98 to freeze -update- latest drivers where?

( I posted this in General and realized this is where it should be:I just installed a Voodoo 5500 AGP in my box to replace a Voodoo3000. When I try to boot-up after installing, the computer freezes on the "Win98" splash screen. I get the video card beep on loading but nothing more. I can boot in safe mode but cant find anything wrong and the card is listed in the device manager. To install I first removed the old card in device manager, then removed the 3DFX Tools from control panel/add-remove programs.
A friend suggested to look in bios for agp aperture settings...these are at 64. When I replaced Voodoo3000 it worked fine. Did I get a bad card? Any suggestions?

Voodoo5 needs its own IRQ. The easiest way to get a good IRQ distribution is to mowe Your PCI cards to another PCI slots. And do not forget that most motherboards do share an IRQ of the first or second PCI slot with the AGP slot. Find it in Your mobo manual and then leave that PCI slot empty.
About the AGP aperture size - it does not matter, I have it set to 8 because Voodoo5 anyway does not use AGP memory access feature.

Soundblaster= IRQ 10 (3)
voodoo 3 = IRQ 11 (2)

Why would any of these change when going from V3 to V5 ? Everything worked fine with the older V3.

Someone said that V3 is probably still listed in sys props...to go in safe mode there and remove it but for the life of me I cant remember how to get there. (It's early for me guys and I still have my head up my ass) Most of this stuff is way over my head anyway

Safe mode is easy just tap F8 all the way through bootup.
did you double check power connector(molex)to the card
What you do want to do is go into system propertys/device manager/display adapters/card listed/driver tab

click update driver/next/check-Display a list of all the drivers bla bla -next/check show all hardware-(standard display types)-standard display adapter(vga) next/let load/shut down, dont restart

This will clear you of anything the V3 might be leaving behind.

Install V5 (physicaly) on the way to first boot stop in safe mode check display adapters remove V3 or anything else other than the standard vga,if there is two standard vga's remove everything. restart (cross fingers light candle)

It should work if it dosent start testing a lower overclock or disconnect devices that may be hogging power?

Mykex: I connected the supplied Y cable because the power supply cable that I had going from the PSU to my scsi burner was not long enough so I used the Y adapter as an extension. On Boot up it show a V5 bios version whatever. Is it possible that my PSU is not putting out enough power...its a 250W?

"click update driver/next/check-Display a list of all the drivers bla bla -next/check show all hardware-(standard display types)-standard display adapter(vga) next/let load/shut down, dont restart"

Do I uncheck anything here? or do you mean to check standard VGA so it runs on that?

Yes set it so that it runs on standard VGA driver. It is S.O.P for installing a new Vidcard to free windows association to the old cards drivers during post. Not to be a wise guy but its page1 letterA of the instructions.;) I read them right after I have installed my new hardware, just in case I missed something.;) I doubt it is a power issue unless you have a ton of drives, fans ect.(cellerys dont eat much?)but double checking the connection cant hurt. The V5 does take some watts but try to sort out the easy stuff first. Of course the OC is a bit of a wildcard but I doubt its an issue, try the install routine first.

The freezing at the splash screen sounds remarkably similar to what happens when your AGP is too high.

Check in your BIOS, I bet you have 1:1 set instead of 2:3 for AGP:FSB

Where can I get the latest official drivers including 3DFX Tools. I want the latest official ones before trying the betas that come without the 3DFX Tools that were made available on 02/21/01

Wow..thanx for all the responses guys ....;) As you can tell I finally managed to stumble my way through and finally install that sucker. What I was doing wrong was not changing to a default adapter before...I think. Any way I'm up and running but I was a little disappointed with the jaggies in games. I have the drivers dated 05/05/00 so I ques the newer ones must improve certain things. I'm not too sure what settings to play with. I'll start with the latest drivers and work from there. Can anybody tell me which drivers they've had the best results with. I'm hesitant to try the X3DFX drivers because they don't come with the 3dfx tools upgrade and I think I should havre the latest official one first. How are those beta drivers liked?

Thanks again guys. .....;)

HG..where do you get these numbers. Where is this info found? In my info tab it says version 4.12.01.0543 - Tools version 2.40.86. The only thing I could do was go by date, mine are 5/5/00 and the 1.04 are from sept/00

The way I loaded last was the latest from 3DFX 1.04.01 then I installed the X3dFX on top and all my tweak settings worked. Its pretty easy after you get used to the regedit like string for the tools hub/advaced features. You might want to poke around some of the sites Happy Gamer suggested for tweak references to get an idea.
Oh and in the advanced features if you do this.
Example:

-..3DFX Tools
. .
. .-..AGP Command FIFO
. .
. .....AGP 2X <---right click and a "whats this?" opens and gives a basic overview of the feature(two new ones are missing)

Someone else may help with this fuzzy thought....somewhere along the line with all the new drivers theres an option for different chipsets in the drivers. I cant remember where from or when but somewhere I ended up with a VIA chipset option?
