VOODOO5 Support Hidden Surface Removal!?!?!?!

Hmm...I dunno, but that would be really cool....what driver version though? There have been a few since the 1.03's, but I haven't gotten any.

No, the latest DX 8 compatable drivers aren't the ones that use HSR. Those drivers will be released later on. Reverend made a post on that thread, referring to a news post of his on 3dpulpit.com. This leads me to believe that the "big performance booster" drivers are indeed the ones that may have some sort of HSR.

That is what I was thinking off what 3dfx might do. Makes sense to me if it can be done.

yeah, your right, the latest dx8 ones don't support it, i just checked it out for myself (at least in win2k)
but interesting...how will they do it? in software?

They might still be able to do it in hardware. Look at the GeForce 2, it wasn't designed to do FSAA, but they added it into the drivers, and it is done through hardware....so I suppose it might be possible...not really sure though. HSR isn't the same as FSAA.

It can be done in software, but it will eat up a massive amount of CPU cycles.

If this is true, then we can expect a large performance gain at high rez (where we're fillrate/bandwidth limited) and a performance drop at lower rez. Pick yer poison. If you normally run at 1024x768 or lower, then I guess it would be well advised to leave this feature checked off.

how bout we say that everything dave says is about "nvidia"... sooo... how bout that new "nvidia" driver with hsr listed?

Well I don't say everything about NVIDIA.. I saw more about 3dfx... specifically performance stuff as of late.. so I guess that wouldn't work..
