Voodoo5 Question, please answer ;)

Is a Voodoo5 5500 AGP 64Meg significantly better than an SDR Geforce 32 meg? And also, is $137 a good price for one? I've never even *considered* a voodoo5 before, but I'm considering it now.

Advice appreciated!

I have just purchased one for £99 which is slightly more than what you are to pay, and I thought it is a good deal. You'll find that for sims it is great, but the GFoRCE is slightly faster. However, you'll find that the image quality of the Voodoo 5 is probably the richest on the market.

sansoora, he said a GeForce SDR, not a GTS.

the 5500 is much faster than an SDR at higher resolutions, and has far superior image quality.

$137 is a good price, but be careful, where are you going to buy it? Is it local or online?

A few things to consider.....

1.Support,I have heard updates are till 2002 but I dont expect NVidia to allocate overtime hours working on them.
2.It's huge make sure you have the room for it on your board/in your case.
3.As with most Voodoo's it sucks up power and very converts that energy to heat quite well.
4.It does give a very rich emersing enviroment and does well to make use of FSAA but some fine lines can be lost in the process.
5.Not the fastest raw FPS card you can buy.(you wont "win" at 3D#2K)

Thats to name a few but I have one and I like it. If your shopping here use Mastercard and get 10% off for $123.30ttl.

As a matter of fact I was looking at the one over at compgeeks.com, LOL :) Well, I'd better see what kind of dough I can get out of my geforce and try to snag one of those while the getting is good ;) Hell, aslong as it has SOME good drivers for Win2k, I have plenty of room in my case ;)

Thanks all! Much appreciative of the advice!

acfording to pricewatch I can get a PCI version for just a few dollars more. WIll I notice any performance difference from PCI to AGP on the voodoo5? I remember that the voodoo3's never made use of AGP so the performance didn't change, but I haven't read much with regard to the Voodoo5's. Thoughts? :)

Thanks!

no, unless you play at 1280x1024 and above you will not notice a difference in benchmarks let alone real life. however when playing DVDs cpu utilization is unusually high for a modern card so don't expect demanding multitasking at that time. Anandtech has a thorough review. it's the best PCI card around.

I read somwhere that the pci also takes more of a hit than agp when fsaa is used.
