I just received my Ati 8500 and plugged into my box. I had the Voodoo5 b4 and notice the 2D on the voodoo5 was much better :( also the color configuration looks more vivid and balanced with the voodoo card. DAMN!!!!!! But speed was better on the Ati other than that nothing compared to my voodoo :(

was this a mistake or what? only plays CS but was waiting for Warcraft III so i jump on the bandwagon

edit: just to let all the average joe know, you'll have to get the latest patches for this ATI card and fix the dang refresh rate. Also if you experienced the overflow error in CS please download the ati_fixed for Halflife.

Yah I agree...there are so many things the V5 did well...just couldn't keep up in the fps category. I'm still tinkering with my GF3 Ti200 settings to get my 2d even close to my V5...still not there. 150 fps with max details @32bit x 1280 in RTCW keeps the GF3 firmly planted in my machine though :) The V5 PCI is still nice as my second card.

I've always considered the V3 3000 and above to have marginally better 2D visual quality then the ATi Radein series at high resolutions, the difference is pretty small though. Matrox is still #1 for 2D of course.

I'm very suprised to hear that the Voodoo5 has better 2D. The ATI 8500 is supposed to have a 400 MHz RAMDAC!

Yeah - the 2d on the V5 was superior... That doesn't change the fact that the 8500 kicks its ancient ass it 3d.

Please change that to "IS" :)

2D visual quality depends on AMNY other things besides RAMDAC. RAMDAC is but a small part of it, and has it's largest impact on maximum attainable resolution and refresh rate moreso then actual quality.
Consider the fact that the old Matrox G200 with it's 250MHz RAMDAC manages to compare extremely well with even the Radeon, and look's every bit as good as even the best GeForce cards.
The king of 2D in the Matrox G400/450/550 all have a slower RAMDAC then the Radeon 8500 and yet they are classicially considered the best 2D cards money can buy, and deservedly so.

Do you base your opinion on the higher resolutions? I just usually use 800x600 or 1024x768 and the
difference in 2D quality is minimal between Matrox, ATI Radeon and GF3.

I am still hanging on to my V5. I run desktop @ 1280 x 1024 and I have run all games at 1024 x 768 - until now. Return to Castle Wolfenstein made me drop to 800 x 600 and it was still very jerky in some complex areas (especially the Chateau). Luckily, I finished the single player game yesterday :) and I don't play online, so I guess I will be fine with my V5 for a few weeks or months more.

But can some fan of 3dfx and their image quality recommend me any viable upgrade? I am not willing to spend more than about $90 on a video card. Thanks.

Who cares about 2d? Great, now I can play Super Mario Brothers at 1600x1200.

ddragon, personally I dont know what to recommend for a upgrade for the V5, cos the current videocard market don't have what I'm looking for which is:

Great 2D just like Matrox's or the Voodoo5
Fast 3D even with all the eye candy turned on
Good DVI support plus DVD hardware support
Something that has great TV out..... hmmm... dont think there is a card made with this feature yet.

With all the above combined, this card will be called = NviMaTi GeVoodeon G1000MAX Ultra EXTREME <------ LOL!!! All 4 company join together as one

One possible up coming Video Card .... Geforce ??? w/ 3dfx technology <----if this ever happened Ati is in Deep SH##!!

<< Who cares about 2d? >>

2D isn't just for games, cap'n. So as much as you like Mario Brothers, you're staring at a 2D screen right now in your web browser.
And desktop.
And CD-burner software.
And MP3 playlists.
And word processors...

Do I need to continue? You use 2D graphics far more than you do 3D unless your computer is dedicated to NOTHING but games (in which case you'd be better off with a far cheaper X-box.)
But then if games were all you did with your computer, you wouldn't be in here now would you? ;)

People that run in high resolutions. Start running your desktop routinely at 1600x1200 and all of a 2D quality starts mattering a hell of a lot. Sit a system with the average GF2 at 1600x1200 for a few hours and see how your eyes feel. ;)

<< Great 2D just like Matrox's or the Voodoo5 >>

--- Nothing can match Matrox IMHO, but ATi can offer 2D extremely close to that of 3dfx.

<< Fast 3D even with all the eye candy turned on >>

---- ATi or nVidia can manage that.

<< Good DVI support plus DVD hardware support >>

ATi put the V5's DVD to shame, DVD is one aspect that 3dfx never excelled in IMHO.

<< Something that has great TV out..... hmmm... dont think there is a card made with this feature yet. >>

Matrox G450 eTV, or an ATi card would probably be the best option there.
