Voodoo5 5500 size

i have this crappy HP sitting around, and unfortunately it has no AGP slot, and the pci slots are inhibited by resistors, etc, on the board. the longest slot will just clear a V2 1000, which is a really long voodoo2, and i was wondering how long the voodoo5 was compared to this. i'm sure that the voodoo5 is too long, but i really haven't been able to find dimensions on the v5, and i wanted to be sure.

thanks a lot!

I have concerns about the size of the card as well because my HD is very close to my AGP slot. When I install my new CPU I'll take the time to measure how much space I have.

You could always consider a new case, if it doesn't fit. If that's an option for you, that is.

its really not an option. i've been saving up a long time to get a new vid card, (skimping on groceries, mostly) so i could get the card, but not a case as well.

BFG, why dont you just move the HD to one of the upper drive bays? It would take all of 10 mins. Because the V5 may interfere with the HD that can be very easily moved seems like a silly reason not to get the card you want. BTW, why not a Radeon?

Wingznut PEZ:

My case is full size so it's plenty big. It's just the position of the HD that makes it awkward. Anyway I won't know for sure until I measure it.

I don't really feel comfortable with moving my HD. Anyway like I said before, there might be enough room there anyway, without having to move anything.

BTW, why not a Radeon?

(1) It's very hard to get them where I live.
(2) I don't trust ATi with their driver updates.
(3) Poor 16 bit colour in 3D is unacceptable.

If I lived down where you do, I'd come over with my screwdriver and move the HD for you (FREE!!) :D BTW, 16 bit performance doesn't bother me. I dont play any games in 16 bit color. I play Q2, Q3, HL, UT, STVEF, Serious Sam, NOLF, all in 32 bit color. Who needs 16 bit? BTW, its not all that bad anyway. But when running a 933 MHz system with a Radeon 64, why bother with 16 bit? To me, if you are going to get a new Voodoo, pay the small difference and get the 5500!

there are other considerations besides knowing the length. i still wanted to know exactly how the V5 matched up to the long v2. i haven't had a chance to pull my case apart (mine is a big pain in the ass), and i wanted to know something a bit more abstract than just the length:

"...the longest slot will just clear a V2 1000, which is a really long voodoo2, and i was wondering how long the voodoo5 was compared to this..."

That's very nice of you. :D

I've been told that the 16 bit ugliness that was present with the Rage 128 has been carried over to the Radeon. I've played various games in 16 bit mode with the Rage and I hated it. The image quality was shocking and you were pretty much forced to use 32 bit colour because it was so bad.

To me, if you are going to get a new Voodoo, pay the small difference and get the 5500!

Yeah yeah yeah.

EdipisReks, I dont have one, but remember well how big the V2 cards were. I had an SLI setup, and the cards sat right on top of my master IDE port on my Abit BX-6. I had to "tweak" the cards a bit to get the cable in. I also remember that setup raising my case temp 30 deg F! I must admit that the size and heat output of the V5 is one of the reasons I decided to go for the Radeon instead. I had the V2, then SLI, then a V3 3000. I got tired of having to run extra cooling and having a loud system. With the present setup, everything is nice and cool with very minimal noise.

The price of the V5 has come down A LOT since I was looking at them. If I were looking now, I'd give it serious thought. I would definately go for the 5500 over the 4500.

BFG, just looking out for ya :)

so, you pretty much think that if i can fit a v2 1000 (they seem longer than other V2's i've seen), that i can fit the V5? i could always bend the resistors, or shave the card down some...

thanks a WHOLE BUNCH! :D

Your best bet would probably be to whip out your 12-incher (ruler, that is;)), and open up your case.
