Voodoo3 won't do 1280x1024...

For some reason 1280x960 is the highest resolution it will let me choose, both in games and for the desktop. I checked in both the 3dfxvoodoo3.inf and .inf that is installed for my monitor, and both list 1280x1024 as a supported resolution. I'm fairly sure this is a problem with the Voodoo3 and not the monitor. I was using the latest V3 drivers from the 3dfx website, but installed the new x3dfx drivers to see if it would make a difference, which it did not. The monitor is an ADI ProVista E55+ 17" (0.26mm dot pitch). Anyone run into this problem before?

Didn't help, and I'm using ME not XP. The 3dfx tools report that the monitor drivers support 1280x1024, but the display properties still only go up to 1280x960. It's been a while, but I'm starting to remember why I never really liked 3dfx...

Thought this doesn't really fix your problem, 1280x960 is a preferred resolution to 1280x1024 as it is a proper 4:3 aspect ratio. I don't know why 1280x1024 ever became a standard.

The monitor .inf that windows is using to determine the settings for my monitor says 1280x1024, so I don't know why windows would think it's anything different... and I know 1280x1024 is not the same ratio as the other resolutions, but that doesn't concern me. I prefer 1280x1024 for my desktop, and also I have run into games that don't allow 1280x960, but DO allow 1280x1024 (so I am stuck at 1024x768 while playing them).

Still looking for a solution...

1280x1024 is a "bad" resolution. It's 5:4. 1280x960 is 4:3, and your monitor is also 4:3 so there's no reason for choosing a 5:4 format.

Look, morons, do I tell you what your favorite color is? Do I write video games that don't allow you to choose 1280x960? No, I do not. If you do not have an answer to my problem, please keep your small-minded opinions about what's good and bad to yourselves.

hmmm.....if you want to play games that run at 1280x1024 you would probally be better off with a new video card...the voodoo3 is not a very good video card anymore...

Maybe check for a new .inf file for your monitor, or at least reinstall the existing one...that might help...

I never claimed that the V3 was a good video card, or that it would be spectacular at 1280x1024, but then again I never asked for your advice on what I should buy for my spare computer either. I asked a simple question, and expect a simple answer if anyone knows it. I know you all have no lives and like to just sit around all day arguing about video cards and processors, comparing benchmarks and sharing ideas. I spent a while doing that myself until I realized that I would save myself a lot of stress if I just bought what I wanted and let others do the same.

I have tried reinstalling the monitor .inf as well as the video drivers many times over. I guess I'll have to go elsewhere to find an answer, since this forum appears to have less knowledge and more opinion than I had hoped.

You called me a moron? I just wanted to tell you that 1280x1024 is not a proper resolution. If you do some image editing, you will notice the diffrence pretty quick. I also have a Voodoo 3 3000 and I can select 1280x1024 in Win2k with the 1.03 drivers. And it's nice how you open-minded guy call all of us "I know you all have no lives and like to just sit around all day arguing about video cards and processors, comparing benchmarks and sharing ideas". The problem is between the keyboard and the chair.

Who's this guy for coming in here, asking for help, and then calling us losers? WTF?!? If you're coming in here looking for a direct answer, well... you're also gonna get alternative solutions! Be thankful for the help these guys are offering! If you don't like it, then go elsewhere! We don't need people like you here!

I can f*ck off eh? Look, I came here with a simple problem, hoping for a simple solution. Some of you have been helpful, others have been the same trolling trash that I got sick of two years ago when I stopped reading these forums regularly. Do you have any idea how sickening it is to walk away from this crap, and come back over a year later to ask a legitimate question and have people tell me that I shouldn't be using 1280x1024, and that my video card isn't good enough for it, when they have no idea why I even want to use it? Maybe I need to explain my entire life's story before asking a question here to avoid these kinds of things... here's part of it:

1) I like 1280x1024. It's the resolution I use on my main computer. I have no problem with the fact that it is not the standard 4:3 ratio (of which I am well aware). The GF2 powering it has no trouble at that resolution and I have grown used to it.

2) I bought the V3 for $40 to replace a single 8 MB Voodoo2. I did this because it was a cheap upgrade that would give me a lot more performance. No, it's not the fastest thing on the planet, but it doesn't need to be. It's running with a Celeron 400 for christ's sake, how fast do you think it's going to be?

3) I'm mainly using this computer for web browsing, a second EverQuest box, and Adventure Pinball. None of these activities require outrageous FPS, and all of them look better at higher resolutions. EverQuest in particular is what I'm mainly concerned about. 1280x1024 looks a lot better than 1024x768 does in that game, and since it has no 1280x960 option, I'm stuck at 1024x768 until I can get this problem resolved.

So, now that you know my whole reasoning behind asking the question... please, pretty please, with sugar on top, reply with useful suggestions on how to fix it, and not with your opinions on what I should be running at. Thank yo

This guy doesn't need to be helped... He's just going around looking for trouble. If he actually did read some of the suggestions, like tricking your computer into thinking it's using a different monitor would have resolved his problem, but he didn't even try. I dunno what your problem is buddy, but you need to lose the attitude.

My guess is the monitor. I have the V3 3000 PCI and a 19" NEC and it tops out at 1792 x 1344. Version 4.12.01.0666 dated 11-10-2000. More than happy to provide this information after your last last post. The resolution posts may not have addressed your problem but was informative nonetheless. Unfamiliar with the capabilities of your listed monitor.

Actually I have tried a few of the suggestions, but I've mainly moved the topic over to Ars where I've been getting more of the kinds of replies I was looking for (although there are still a few opinions mixed in there too ;)). I've done some messing around in the registry, where I found a key with a dword "MaxResolution", whose value was set to "1280,960". Unfortunately editing this and changing it to "1280,1024" didn't change anything :( So, I'm still trying to solve this problem.

I went through and cleaned out all the registry settings I could find that had anything to do with 3dfx, Voodoo, Stealth, Diamond, or v2sii, along with deleting all the files I could find with similar names. I wasn't sure, but I thought it might be possible that some lingering settings or files from the 4MB Stealth II S220 I had in there before might be the cause, but so far it hasn't seemed to help
