So I'm looking at upgrading the video on my old SS7 box (K6-2+ OC to 550) from an AGP ATI Rage IIc.

I do some light video editing, and play WarCraft, StarCraft, Kingdom Under Fire, Diablo I & II, Baldur's Gate, etc...

So, which card would be better? ($25 for the TNT2 and $40 for the VooDoo3)

You need a new rig, badly.

Save the $40 you would spend on the V3 and put it towards a nForce mobo, RAM and a Duron CPU. Using the integrated video of the nForce will destroy in every way what you have now, it will be a big step up.

If you must buy a video card then go with the V3, but seriously you need a new rig:)

I agree with ben, your system is dated badly and your k6-2 550 would not max out even the lowly (relatively speaking) voodoo 3.
Instead of an nforce rig, maybe look at and ECS k7s5a, 900 athlon, and a voodoo 3.
K7s5a 70 shipped
voodoo 3 40 (if you can spend a bit more you could get an MX for around 65)
athlon 900mhz 65 shipped

Voodoo3 is no doubt faster video card that TnT2 M64 and suits better for SS7 rig. Damn, I miss my SS7 system, one day I'm buying it back from my uncle :)

I had a K6 450Mhz system with both those video cards....the Voodoo 3 performed much better.....

Definitely the Voodoo3. If you were considering a TNT2 Ultra, it may be different, but the TNT2 M64 is a weak piece of junk.

While your K6-2 550 is outdated, the games you list above should be quite playable with your CPU and a Voodoo3. Max Payne, no, but many of these 1997-1999 era games are fine.

Thanks for the advice folks.

The poll is pretty lopsided, the Voodoo3 wins all. Although I'm aware of the age of my system, it does what I need it to, without spending any additional $$. The new machine (whenever that happens) is likely to be an Nforce 420 based system, but it may be quite a while before I can do it.

One of the kids PC's is a K6-3+ 450 @ 450 (6 x 75) with a Voodoo 3 PCI. It is actually not bad for an old Socket 7 system. I'd say pretty comparable to a Celeron 450-500. For those not familiar with the + chips, they are quite a bit better than the regular versions. They have full speed on die cache, 256K on the K6-3+ and 128K on the K6-2+. I dont play any of those games you do. One thing that helps on the old games is Glide support. If those games have Glide support (I think they may), they should run pretty darn good on that rig with a Voodoo 3. It will be a large improvement over the Rage card. $40 is not a bunch of money. This would tie you over until you get a new system. Go for it.

voodoo4 maybe better if you can find one cheap enough, it wouldn't be any faster than the v3 for the most part but you would have 32 bit and 2x fsaa
